if you want overkill bet very reiliant then you would have 2 switches in each cab either have one as redundant backup or split the load over 2 but make sure there is capacity in both switches to take all the connections incase one fails
in my company if one switch fails that cab is fucked buts thats because they wont let me spend money so i have to do the best i can and if the consolodation switch goes we are really fucked !!!!
Do you need fibre optic backbone? Not many networks use them - they tend to be for long distance high speed data rather than switch-to-switch which hasn't changed much from when I used to work with 3Com 3300/4400s with 3gig proprietary copper backbone.
fiber is so cheap now most people use it for backbones these days if the run is more than 100 meters there isnt another way (unless you repeat the signal)
Im getting confused now, I have just been emailing my teacher and he has advised the network below, which is a hybrid, using a star and a ring, then using patch panels to connect it, but its confused me as I know don't know where the switches go.
Im going to start over and forget the whole backbone thing I think. Like Bunny said there is no point in fibre unless its over 100m.
your teachers network wont work as there are no switches unless he means switches and not patch panels lol then with rings you have trouble with possible duplication of messages so ou need to use spanning tree protocol
