they dont need to be part of a domain, a workgroup will do. a cross over cable will be needed. set the default gateway as the ip address on pc 1 and vice versa.
need to be part of the same subnet as well.
to check this once you have connected the cat5 to pc and router, goto start - Run - Type "cmd" ( without the "'s) - in there type ipconfigLeave it set to automatic, router will delegate the correct settings.
Is this a wind-up?! Don't you work for an ISP?

I did work for an ISP working on ADSL2+ implementation but why would that make me an expert at networking a laptop to a pc??
I guess your mum's female but I doubt that makes her an expert in the escort trade does it?

+ its windows and Linux, not the easiest thing to do.
Some things I know Sn00p and some I don't. I'd rather be open and ask for help with something I'm stuck on rather than muddle through and try and pretend I know it all.
I've never had any need to network two PC's together before so it's not something I've picked up along the way.
So back to ON TOPIC, did the help we've given resolve your query, or not?

Fair enough! Apologies, I just assumed this would be something you knew judging by other posts of yours I've read!
My guess is that it'll probably work out of the box providing that both pc's are on the same subnet - unbunto is supposed to be "user friendly". If not, it won't take very much tinkering to get it working.
i work for an isp but i'm pretty clueless when it comes to linux.
