Networking two pc's together

I've been given a laptop from my old man and I would like to network it to my main pc.

The pc is running XP Pro and the Laptop is running Ubuntu. Is it possible to network the two together via my router? (Router has 4 ethernet ports)

Yes should be possible.

Just make sure both PC's are on the same domain and they should be visible to each other.

they dont need to be part of a domain, a workgroup will do. a cross over cable will be needed. set the default gateway as the ip address on pc 1 and vice versa.

Domain/Workgroup same difference

You DONT need a crossover cable for a router, x-over cables are used for direct PC<->PC connections. Standard CAT 5 Patch will be fine. The router will sort out the IP's via DHCP, so no need to mess with that either.

Leave it set to automatic, router will delegate the correct settings.

to check this once you have connected the cat5 to pc and router, goto start - Run - Type "cmd" ( without the "'s) - in there type ipconfig

DHCP should have assigned you an ip etc etc.. thought i would shove my orr in

I did work for an ISP working on ADSL2+ implementation but why would that make me an expert at networking a laptop to a pc??

I guess your mum's female but I doubt that makes her an expert in the escort trade does it?

+ its windows and Linux, not the easiest thing to do.

He seems pretty clued up technically though which is why I thought it was an odd question. He's mentioned stuff way beyond this before as well.

My guess is that it'll probably work out of the box providing that both pc's are on the same subnet - unbunto is supposed to be "user friendly". If not, it won't take very much tinkering to get it working.

I'm running Ubuntu from a live cd at the moment and I'll be reformatting and installing it later so I'm not in a position to try networking them together just yet. I'll report back later this afternoon and let you all know how I got on.

No worries.. I tend to learn through experience and practice rather than anything else and with networking machines together being something I've never done I'd rather ask people than read pages on some random website

You'll need to use SAMBA on your Ubuntu box to see your XP machine I believe.

If it's not already installed, just go into synaptic and search for samba.

I'm not sure about seeing Ubuntu from XP though, probably the normal file sharing wizard will do the job, it's been a very long time since I had shares setup.
