New Clio...

  1.2 TCE Clio Dynamique S
So... my order is in for a new clio. Sensibleness has meant that I'm lumbered with the 1.2 TCE Dynamique S

I'm happy with it though so don't worry too much about me!

In 6-8 weeks I'll be collecting it (yawn) and I'm looking for ideas for mods and the like. Has the new Clio (is it the Mk3 or MK4?) got any custom parts for it yet?

I'm also interested to see if anyone has done anything fancy with the 1.2 TCE. Being a turbo I'm sure that a chip/remap here and a gentle tap with a pursuasion tool number 5 there would give some real results.

What are the options and what are people doing?

I've checked out the forums but there isn't much on the new clios or the TCE engine.

I should add that I saw a ClioSport in the shell garage in bracknell!

:)

Colour wise I'm with Henry Ford....It can be any colour as long as its black!

The only extras are Black metalic paint and Climate control. The Air Con knobs just looked silly. The Dynamique S comes with tinted rears, half leather interior, sports front wings (Can't see the difference myself!) and more importantly the keycard entry with push-button start!

First 'extra' to be installed is a MEX-BT5100 Sony Headunit as it is cheaper than a renault Bluetooth kit and I really hate the look of the standard head unit.

Will be on the look-out for some black alloys and low-pro tyres.

I've looked at the K-tec racing website as they have a few Group-buys on here. They also post on here which is a good sign!

The engine has been out a while (June last year) so I thought that someone would have done a remap already. 100bhp is a ok amount (a little less than what I have at the moment) but I'm sure that a remap/boost increase will push a couple of extra G-G's from the engine.

:)

p.s. I meant to say in my first post that I saw a ClioSport STICKER in a clio when filling up with Petrol in the Mighty Brackers!

Why oh why do people buy new 1.2 Clios and then want to mod them... it's money wasted, and pointless exercise imo.

Why didn't you just get a bit more of a powerful model?

I'd have thought that a 1.2 engine with a turbo WOULD have been tuneable.

I understand the concept of trying to mod a NA 1.2 being a bit pointless.

And I went for the 1.2 TCE because I was looking to keep the costs of ownership down. Couldn't afford the New Laguna Sports Tourer and hate the look of the Megane. Wanted a brand new car and wanted to keep in the Renault family.

Could have been worse, I nearly looked at the twingo! :p

I was hoping that this site would welcome all Clio Owners, not just the Renault Sport/Cup versions. I must admit I'm not up on what a 1*2 is. Is that a Mark 1 Phase 2? Bit too old for my liking.

Its about working with what you've got. I've got the 1.2 TCE Dynamique S coming. So thats what I'm going to be working with.

I'm not jealous of those with more powerful cars as there will alway be a car more powerful but if I can get an extra 10hp from the engine then at 110bhp I'll be more than happy. Its only a small car and it does exactly what is says on the tin.

Lets just see how it goes.

I just see buying brand new as a mugs game... you will lose a couple of k in the first few months of ownership, money thrown down the drain, and all for a lowly 1.2? if you wanted to keep the costs of ownership down you wouldn't be modding it or adding a turbo, which will drink fuel and be costly to replace when it eventually goes. A 1.6 litre Clio would have been barely any more money in terms of ownership cost, a negligible amount of money extra on fuel, and basically the same servicing... while providing a fair bit more grunt.

A used Clio with 20k on the clock would have been a more sensible purchase imo for a car like that... paying top whack for a brand new 1.2 just makes no sense to me. :)

Buying brand new is just something I do for the little people, you know, the ones who can't afford Brand new. In a couple of years I'll let them buy my car off me...

(J/k! :) - I'd never let one of them buy my car.:rasp: )

The 1.2 TCE has a turbo already, I'm not boy-racering it up saying, 'Yeah, I Iz getting a Turbo Technics Massif turbo fitted n I iz having NAWZ fitted too for when I take my spotty 14 year old girlfriend out to dinner at Maccy Dees'.

I've never bought brand new in my life before but SWMBO was calling the shots. My last car was my Laguna which I bought 3 years ago for £800 and had never let me down. I'd have been happier doing that again by she isn't called SWMBO for nothing!

But... priorities change and before you know it you want 3 years of budgetable car driving. With no problems and reliablility being the key.

I should add

1) I'm not a fan of the previous models of the clio (except the last one, but then don't like the rears being the same as the previous model).
2) I'd have prefered 2nd hand (cheaper!) but wanted reliability of 3 years of hassle free(ish) motoring.
3) Mods will be limited... I'm not after a Westveil (do they still exist) rudeboywidemouth body kit. I'm sure most people will agree, subtle is the key when it comes to modding.

so, to be clear, I'm buying a Clio 1.2 TCE (Turbo already fitted) from Renault. From what I understand there aren't many custom items available (yet) and no-one is aware of any map/chip for the engine.

Also, people aren't interested in the smaller engines just Larger Engine = Quicker cars.

I'm not going to let that get me down. I've driven the 1.2TCE and it was fairly nippy. got to 80 without noticing on the test run.

For people wanting to learn more about the 1.2 TCE

some website - Not Renault said:
Renault claims that the 1.2 TCE - which will be fitted in the new Twingo city car and Modus as well as the current Clio - has the power of a 1.4, the torque of a 1.6 and the fuel consumption of a 1.2. That's 100bhp and 107lb-ft, and, in the case of the Clio, 47.9mpg and 140g/km of carbon dioxide - pretty good for a warmish hatch.

The TCE unit is based on the existing 75bhp 1.2-litre 16-valve four, but around one third of its components are new, including the fuel injectors, spark plugs, valves, coils, cylinder head cooling system and exhaust manifold. The sump is now made of aluminium. Key improvements to the engine include more effective tumble and swirl motions when the fuel and air are mixed in the cylinders, and thus more efficient combustion controlled to a finer degree. Kermanac'h says this gives many of the benefits of a direct injection system without the cost and complexity.
Then there's that turbo: a specially designed single-scroll unit sourced from Mitsubishi. 'We're keeping it relatively simple and cheap,' said Kermanac'h. This has been developed to give an evenly distributed performance boost throughout the rev range, with an extra 5bhp/4.4lb-ft of overboost available momentarily in second, third and fourth gears. The TCE has not been set up for high performance, though. Hence the five-speed manual gearbox. And although it has the heavier-duty crankshaft, suspension and brakes used in the Clio diesels, in order to cope with the increased torque, it hasn't been lowered, stiffened or otherwise sported-up to any degree... for now, at least.

As everyday superminis go, though, it's a very rewarding one. Judging from a drive in a pre-production model, the power delivery is as smooth and progressive as promised, with strong pull from low revs, plenty of mid-range flexibility and relaxed cruising at motorway speeds, and no discernable torque-steer or turbo lag. In fact, if you didn't know that the engine was fitted with a turbo, you probably wouldn't guess.

The TCE has all the characteristics of an unstressed larger block, not an overblown, souped-up small one - and is about as far from, say, the turbocharged tiddly Smart units, or indeed Renault's old 5 Turbo, as it could be. And yes, it could well be a realistic substitute for a 1.4 or even 1.6, with its additional advantage of added efficiency and reduced emissions.

Hope this Helps.

Ahhh my paologies... turbo is already on there... should be in for a cheap remap for an extra 20-ish bhp or so then. :)

And never mind the other half... put your foot down man. ;)

Thats what I was thinking.

Also, to keep below the CO2 levels I bet they've de-tuned it a little. A Tweek of the boost and a remap could easily see a 25% power increase (Using Wiltsteve's Patented bench racing formula!)

I think 120-125 would be a healthy figure for the car. Not too stupid but nippy enough.

And with regards to putting my foot down with SWMBO..... I tried that once and found she'd hidden my balls under it. Ouch!

:D

if it can be remaped it will a while off the 1.2 TCE (Turbo Control Efficiency). engine features a revised 16-valve heads and stronger internals to handle the higher stress caused by turbocharging, resulting in 101 hp (74 kW) at 5500 rpm -with built in overboost temporarily increased to 105 hp in second, third and fourth gear - and 145 Nm at 3000 rpm.

;) so they will be thrashed around in 4th gear

im still waiting to see remaps availble for the mk3 dci :(
