New Era or Old School?

  106 GTi
I see one everyday going home from work, driven by and old boy, bet he has had it from new, I may have to stalk him to his house!

  BMW Z4 3.0i
New school. I thought even despite of the extra size and weight, new cars still handle better and go faster.

Looks a fantastic example.

Thanks mate.. has taken lots of swarfega to get all the dirt off me after cleaning it up weekend after weekend.. but even the gearbox is polished now..lol nothing left to shine up!

I liked the original wheels too.. but have fitted 15's now.. and its lowered a small amount with Konis adj's, as you cant get decent tyres in standard size anymore (that i could find) its far better with 15's in situ.. specially in the wet!! lol.

old skool for me....light nimble cars are more fun ...weight is the enemy of accleration, handling & braking!!

that RGTT is awesome, bet your well proud
one of lifes biggest regrets was selling my J reg (one of the very very last ones) back in 1995, was mint with low miles but for finances it had to go, wish Id got it now for the weekends, would love to have one pushing out 250bhp+, straight line performance would put many cars to shame

agree, gt turbos feel brutal on acceleration, tbh i still think the cups feel raw, but maybe last of a dying breed

Seems we have a liking for the wee 5 GTT here. Even more so than the Clio Williams...? ;)

deffo, love turbo power, though i'd prefer an uno turbo phase 2 (imo better lump as not ohv and tappy lol) but htey have all rotted away

Here's my 5 with the new wheels... although have kept all the OE parts I have changed incase I go back to OE.

Old school for me much better IMO.
However if someone gave me the option of a new Williams or 197 with full warenties I'd take the 197 I'm sorry to say every time.

Im Strange, I Like both old and new school cars e.g.

I Like the R5GTT but dont 100% like the 197
I dont Like old Golf GTi's but i like the new GTi

But if you have to use a car every day for work it would have to be a modern car to get you there and back stuck in traffic jams most old cars just over heat or just stall.

In an ideal world you would have one of each a modern car for the week and a old school car for the weekend to either fiddle with or drive depending on what you like doing :)

Rose tinted glasses is all I can say. The memory is often much fonder than the reality!! Go and drive a mk1 Golf gti if you don't believe me!

If only everyone had the room... the answer is to have an old skool and a newer model, best of both worlds. Thats what i'm doing.. and just play with the 5 at the weekends.

Dont worry, I hear u! :D I will have a change over one weekend soon, I want to see how dangerous it is with those OE wheels on again! lol. I do like them too, so will see what tyres I can get for them... for the orginal looks.. and more of a sleeper.

Old school cool, I love the styling and think they are much better looking than bigger fatter examples today. plus the designers didn't have to hold back as much due to safety :D saying that a few newer cars do look the part also

b******s, lol. I need to stop talking about and being show 5 turbo's or i'll end up going and buying one again ontop of the 182!

lol. Fair point - That would be interesting! I think they look lovely - but they're about as fast as 1.4 Clio and have no mrakes to speak of. lol.

I have a 1972 Triumph TR6. A proper classic. And when it was on the road I spent more time fixing the f**king thing than driving it. lol.

Older cars are fantastic if you can have them as a toy/play thing. For day to use and abuse you can't beat a newer car imho.

i think the 172 cup is as good as hot hatches get.
Not overly heavy but still has enough bits to keep you safe.
I dont think i could go back to older hatches like the williams now but the newer golf gtis etc dont interest me either.

  Renaultsport Clio 182
Old school for me.

Really, really wishing I'd stayed with my 106 GTi. Ok, it's not proper old school hot hatch, but damn that car was so much fun.

Yup, the girlfriend has just sold her 182 in favour of a 106 GTI :)

You can still find some nice examples out there... (but more that are not so nice, just take your time) and find u'rself one!

NOooooooooo!!! took me over 6months to find a minter the last time i bought one so f**k knows how long it will take 7 years on when more have been crashed neglected or ruined by chavs.

Those 5s look mint. I remember driving one when I had my Cav GSi. Felt totally unsafe but great fun at the same time! Awesome dump valve note too ;)
