Hi all

Thought I'd join up as I've recently bought a 172 to have a bit of fun with

I picked up a reasonably cheap 172 and intend to replace everything that needs doing on it and just enjoy it. I've got a Mondeo I use to drive to work in which is utterly boring and joyless to drive but the Clio seems much more fun

I've already been scouting the forum for the guides (lots of useful information that I will be using as my one is a little rough!) so once I've made a bit of progress I might start a thread and get some photos up

Welcome Chris. Where in Essex are you?

Was in the same situation myself - bored of my daily car so bought a 172 as a fun car. No regrets at all! A lot of these cars will have tired suspension - I would recommend replacing all the shocks with cup shocks and fitting your choice of springs.

Thanks for the welcomes. I'm not a million miles away from Southend. I've also got an old E39 535 but it didn't exactly excel at Snetterton hence the need for something a bit more track friendly right out of the box

It is on Koni shocks and springs at the moment but when they finally give up I will most likely swap them for the cup setup. I've been hovering in the for sale section but everything seems to sell pretty fast here!

It's got the usual problems of worn steering wheel, lumpy idle, worn engine and gearbox mounts as well as a few other unique problems but luckily the dephaser sounds quiet at the moment so it could be worse! The brakes have just been ordered from George so work should begin this weekend all being well

Hi Chris. We have regular meets in and around the Southend area. It's nothing too geeky lol
We usually end having a a chat over coffe and donuts. Probably won't be too much more happening this year but keep an eye on the local meets section.

Once I've got a few of the niggles sorted it will be out and about a bit more often. It's a black phase 2 on phase 1 Oz wheels in anthracite

It's not the prettiest thing at the moment as it has definitely had a hard life but should be a bit better once I've given it a once over with the polisher
