New Lens - Progression from standard

  6/468 17poo
I took my camera (450d) on holiday and really had fun with it, now id like to get a better lens can anyone recommend me a decent one - ive been looking at the nifty fifties but would also like a much longer zoom, any suggestions please?

What was your first real lens?

Thanks

First 'real' lens I bought was the Canon 100-400 L IS USM, it's a monster and allows razor sharp images at 400mm handheld. Wierdly it's more expensive now than when I bought it, runs at around 1200-1400 quid these days (depending where you buy) but for wildlife shooting/general stalking ;) it's worth every penny.

Followed that with the 24-105 f4L IS USM and I keep looking at the 50mm f1.2 L but the missus will have my b****cks if I blow 1200 quid on another lens.

Nice choices. You do sound like you need to register for "L"coholics Anonymous though! ;)

@ the OP, what do you want to take pictures of?

It really does depend on budget and what you want to take photos of - you can spend £100-200 on something like a 70-300mm Sigma lens, or £1000+ on an all singing all dancing Canon L lens.

I spent £65 on a 50mm f/1.8 and then £465 on a 70-200mm f/4L as my first two.

As a really rough guide:

Cheap wideangle: Sigma 10-20mm (~£350)
Expensive wideangle: Canon 16-35mm (~£1100)

Cheap walkabout: A Sigma, Tamron or something like the Canon kit lens (~£150-200)
Expensive walkabout: Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L (~£1000) / 24-105mm f/4L IS (~750)

Cheap telephoto: Sigma 70-300mm (~£140), Canon EF-s 55-250mm (~£170)
Expensive telephoto: Canon 100-400mm (~£1200) / 70-200mm f/4L (~£470) / 300mm f/4L IS (~£1000).

Have a look around though, as there are a lot of other lenses out there.

That's quite some list! You sound as bad as me. Any sample shots with the 100-400?

Like the guys said.. Go for the nifty fifty first mate. Get the feel and the hang of it and when you think you need an upgrade then go for another one.

Most of the time mate its not about the kit or lens but its about your vision and creativity. You could have an expensive kit but come out with a crap pictures. Just know when you stand first and go on from there. ;) Good luck.
