  Works Van.... FAST
Hello all, though I'd start by saying hello as this is my first post in the CS forum! Having read some of the previous posts on here, you all (well 99% of you) seem like a thoroughly informative bunch, so I took the plunge and joined.

Im currently in the market for a used 182. I don't care if it is a cup or FF as I weight more than a small elephant, so the weight savings in the cup might be in vein.... I don't even mind if its red silver blue pink or black. I just have to get that chassis and drive train in my life! A friend of mine purchased a FF182 about 6 months ago, and he let me have a little poodle round. It felt like a really solid little car and it had that "chuck-ability". The following month another friend got a 197, which I too had a go in it, and felt a bit let down by it. The engine felt a bit too rev happy, but most disappointingly, the chassis belt a bit bogged down a too stiff. So I came to the conclusion that the 182 is the car for me. I have had Fiesta ST's, focus ST's, Golf GTi's and the likes, but the 182 really shines IMO.

So here is the question. I was out looking at cars yesterday and stumbled upon a black FF182 in really cracking condition at a local garage. No dents, no dings, interior was in EXCELLENT shape i.e. the steering wheel didn't resemble Dirk Kuyt's face, and it had 50k on the clock. I Had a look round it and it seemed really impressive, but I had to shoot off, so I took the chaps card. I rang him back today after I did a bit of research about what I should look for and found out the following:-

Plus points
-It has a milltek cat back exhaust on it (not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing really but saves me replacing the standard one)
-The AUX belt was done at about 38k
-FRSH
-MOT's for another 6 months
-2 keys.

Point for potential decrease in value
Cambelt has never been changed as Im sure you're all aware, renault suggest 5 years or 72k (whichever comes first)
3 previous owners (seems like quite a few but I guess it is a 6 year old car)
FF, not cup, and cups seem to hold their valuer better (from what I've seen in the classifieds)

Sooooooo, how much do you think its worth and what should I offer him? He has it up at £3995, which seems a bit excessive, and he obviously expects to be bartered down. Also, is there anything else I can say that will help me get a better value deal i.e. mentioning the cambelts etc.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Im sorry for the essay, but I've always wanted to be a journo hahaha

Hi. Welcome along.

Camblet obviously would need to be done. But it not being done isn't such a bad thing. It means you can get it done yourself by someone trustworthy. Where abouts are you located?
3 owners isn't a lot. Not something I'd worry about.

As for the FF/Cup debate. A lot of people get it wrong, especially on AT/PH. They see another Clio, think its the same as theirs and just copy the advert.

FF = 182 with the packs added on.
182 = As they come
Cup = Minus good stuff

That order is in value order. Cups are worth the least.

  172 cup
hi and welcome

if i were you i'd stick in 3250 because even tho it has frsh it hasnt had the cambelt done, this at a renault specialist will cost about 600 quid!!! and its best to get dephaser, aux belt and cambelt done at same time, just search the forums on peoples horror stories about this, so state the fact the cambelt hasnt been done and see where it goes mate

Can't help you with the values of a 182 and what you should pay but you need to add the cost of a cambelt and aux belt change on top of the price :) - Could be anything from 4 - 900 depending on where you go so bare that in mind :)

Hi there :)

Cambelt needs doing so you need to count that in the price 400 say.

it would be worth near to that price with the cambelt being done, and done by a specialist not a backstreet garage as otherwise you end up with all sorts of problems.
start it up and get it warmed up and see if it sounds like a tractor on idle, if it does it will need a dephaser pulley along with the cambelt.

If its clean, and only on 50k, I'd say its worth £3500 al day long (given you then have to go get the belts done)

Worth an offer

Well i can tell him that the cam belt, aux belt and de-phaser need to be done and knock him down accordingly. How much would all this usually cost?

Upto £3750. £4k at an ABSOLUTE push
Must be in really good nick. I'm quite fussy about little bits
Dont really want anything too modified
FSH is a must
