New servers...one for the geeks

DK will love this what with him stroking over HP kit in his sleep.

We're in the process of getting all new servers and a SAN sorted in the office. This is the first lot mounted in the first cabinet. This will be filled soon, then we've got 4 more full cabs coming throughout the year.

From bottom up.

Old MSA 30 with 10 x 300gb Ultra SCSI 320 15k RPM hard drives
Old Proliant G4 DL 380 with 6 x 300gb Ultra SCSI 320 15k RPM hard drives
MSA 60 with 12 x 300gb SAS 15k RPM hard drives
Proliant DL 360 G5 with 4 x 146gb SAS 10k RPM hard drives
Storageworks 1/8 Autoloader Ultrium 3

Should be fun setting this up. It should be enough to cover an office of 80 staff while we wait for the rest of the kit.

LOL s**t load of Kit.

I actually bought a server at work from DK, he promised me free blowies but it never materialised :(

that is nothing. i will post a cam phone pic of a certain large phone operating system companies server room when i'm in there in a few weeks time. if i said it had a LOT of servers in there, that wouldn't even come close to what you think when you walk in there in real life.

Good stuff mate.
ClioSport server is a Proliant.. so you can see my preference of kit!

Only ever use Dell PowerEdge's at work..

Geek pics > * :D

we are an HP reseller and we sell a hell of a lot of kit, and not much seems to go wrong with proliant servers. mainly the hard drives die.

We are lucky we buy direct from HP. It may not seem a lot to some people, but that's for an office of just 80 people!!

You should see our offices over in LA, especially where they host WoW. Hence why we have such a good relationship with HP.

we've got a sh*t load of HP servers, a lot of them are used remotely by staff based in Bangalore, we've also got a freebie Dell Poweredge from elsewhere in the company which is also used as a terminal server. The majority of our kit is actually Sun though.

We buy direct from HP too (we have some special deal through our parent company)

I'll take a picture of one of our newer racks tomorrow, full of shinier kit that yow (bigger site, tho)

Our deal is through our parent company too. We tell them what we want and a load of boxes turn up. We've just put another £100k in the budget for servers and network stuff. Madness for such a small office, but our requirements are a little higher than that of most companies.

The deals you get if you are big enough to buy direct are amazing.

i wish i could show you the cost price and rrp on our stock system for hp stuff, but i figure it's not really something i should do, but just to give you an idea, our top sales guy is taking home around £10k in commission this month.

wow, I should be in Sales instead of techy/web.

yeah, unfortunately i'm a techy too and the funny thing is that the sales guys couldn't do their jobs without us, except they are earning waaay more than us.

nice Lee, haven't seen a server for a couple of weeks now lol.

i put a quote together for a large energy company the other week for something they are buying this month, 250 c-class blade servers with 2 DC procs and 32gb ram each, plus a nice san, came to about £2m

that sales person is currently on 250k a year, and know pretty much nothing about servers etc. sickening!

it would probably surprise you how few companies buy direct from HP, most of it is through the channel, only a few select companies are direct and thats normally just because they insist on buying direct from the manufacturer, sometimes I even come up against HP and even beat their price.

The blades for the quote i did is for one of the worlds biggest energy companies so its surprising what companies don't buy direct and mostly prefer to use a reseller etc.

We were told we were one of the few who are allowed to buy direct. We're pretty big. I think last year we turned over $26 billion as a group. The prices we pay are shockingly low. When we were a pour indie we used to pay more for reconnditioned kit. lol

LMAO, I was just reading the first quarter results. The fact there are less games in the French Football Ligue 1 works out well for us as we own Paris Saint Germain!

Some areas of sales must be a total breeze. If you are lucky enough to get an account like the one you mention DK he can just sit on his arse and let the money roll in. Same with whoever does our stuff I suppose. We have to have it, we only use HP so it's not exactly hard for him. We even know exactly what we want each time an order is placed.

It's like new cars sales at a main dealer. If someone is there looking they obviously have that car in the forefront of their mind. Unless it's a CS test pilot so they can write about it on here. lol

let me get a picture of mine :D

31.53€ a share... steeeeep :p

I'm sure I've got "options" somewhere at home, but as usual I can't touch them for something like 4 years.

Last time that happened at the companies peak I stood to make £170k profit, buy the time I could sell they were worth less than when they were issued and then the company went under. Sods law. lol

we have companies such as symbian, redbull racing, and lockheed martin, who all buy all their equipment through us.

i am pretty certain they are more than big enough to go direct to hp, but we are a VAR so these companies are getting services on top that wouldn't be provided if they went direct.

Share price in my company crashed from $120 to $5 during the .com meltdown in 2000. I have options - how do you think I felt!!! (saying that, it worked out well as I got new options at $5, and only had to sell a few to get my 172 for cash!)

Anyway, as we've got a server willy waving contest going on, we've got a server room here full of approx. 1000 rack mounted servers to do scalability testing. Most are running vmware so the total number of server images is way over the 1000 mark. The most impressive thing is that we can rebuild all 1000+ servers at the same time to get fresh O/S installs. Disk space isn't actually that big as we use networked VMs so each individual machine doesn't need that much disk, they just connect to one of our SANs. Servers are a mixture of IBM and Dell.

So there! :rasp:

when LTO4 comes out later this year it will be twice as fast and twice the size, now that will be pretty impressive, 1.6tb tapes running at 320mb/s.

Dell already sell LTO4 drives.
I can't see anything on the site which says they are taking orders only, so I only presume they are shipping them also?

that surprises me as its HP, IBM and Quantum that are the threee technology providers behind Ultrium

http://www.ultrium.com

So I can't understand how Dell have got the technology to sale first unless they aren't licensed as there are pretty tough licensing rules for ultrium, i can't even see Dell listed as a licensee on the website.

I have been out of the loop for 3 weeks being out of the office so I might get back in in a couple of weeks to find that HP have done the soft launch but I can't see the licensed product shipping before IBM and HP?

But then Dell's R&D budget is less than my weekly petrol bill so no doubt they have just paid someone to take the technology.

Dell have had them a while now, tho.
