New to CS, could do with some advice!

Hello all at CS!!

Basically my situation is that Ive just got my first job (im 21 btw) and I am seriously looking at upgrading my Clio 1.2. It is my first car, and it hasnt put a foot wrong, but I would like to upgrade to something with a bit more va va voom!!:rasp:

I am considering a 182, I think I could spend about 6-7k on the car, and Ive budgeted for all the usual extras like increased insurance etc. Im still living at home, so I dont have much finacial outgoings :)

My question is, can anyone give me some advice on the running costs for a 182? Obviously it's going to be a lot more than my 1.2, but I just dont know how much different.
My main concern is ecomony, my 1.2 does 400 miles per tank (about £45 to fill I think), so how does a 182 compare to that? What are typical servicing costs/tyres etc?

Any advice would be much appreciated! I know Ive come to the right forum!

Hello and welcome.

I can't comment on a 182 specifically because I've got a 172...but...

If running costs & economy are a concern, then I'd forget the 1*2 route! If you drive in the most economical way possible, I can probably get somewhere around 300-315 miles out of a tank, however, if you throw in some more exciting acceleration and not shifting early then it drops dramatically. I probably get 200-250 out of tank because my journey to work is down twisty roads.

Servicing is fairly expensive, I need to book mine in for a major service (cam belt change) and I know its getting to "new pads" stage on the brakes, so it's gonna relieve my wallet of a fair amount of cash soon.

I own a Phase 1 172 but id imagine that running costs are about on par for the range tbh.

Servicing isnt that dear if you know where to look, also if your going to get a 182 make sure the cars priced realistically due to the fact the cambelt will be due if its an 04/54. To get this and a service done it cost me £550 which is damn reasonable compared to the £8-950 renault will do it for.

Fuel consumption isnt that bad either, i typically get 33/34 mpg.

But as i always say, i didnt buy it to drive it like mother teresa

Welcome, I too can't comment on the 182, but you will get a great one (maybe even a trophy) for your budget.

They're not a major concern, its obviously something I have to think about though.
As I have no experience with this sort of car, I was just wondering how it compared to a 1.2 lol!

Fuel costs more for my 182 than my 1.4 was but I use super unleaded now like V-Power but the difference in MPG for me isn't too bad though now I tend to do longer runs which helps. Before I would get about 40MPG maybe a bit more but now I get between 34-39MPG depending on how careful I am and the types of trips I'm doing.

As far as servicing goes before I would mind doing things a bit cheaper but now I get the car serviced at a better place and the cost reflects that, but overall I'm suprised it's not been worse. The insurance isn't that bad either if you shop around a bit for it.

Hi mate i would get something a bit cheaper. and keep some money for if something goes wrong for me i would have one with the cambelt and all servicing already done. bit like mine thats for sale.

I have owned a 182/v6 and now a 172. Pound for pound 172 is the best tbh. Cheaper and same speed as a 182

how is a 172 cheaper to run than a 182? Infact i get about 60 miles more to the tank than my 172, so i'd say it was cheaper.

Welcome!

The petrol costs came to me as a bit of a shock when I first got my 172, I had a 1.6 before so thought it wouldnt be much more, but it was! I struggle to ever get more than 34mpg at a push though just cause of where I drive to etc

I was also a bit shocked by the cost of parts/servicing, but only because of labour. Alot of bits are hard to get at, like when my alternator went, they had to take the front bumper off bumping up the labour on a job. Plus oil is mega bucks! But little things like filters dont need much more than other cars i've owned!

It may be that little bit more to run & service, but the car to own is so amazing, its worth every penny! I'd recommend a 172, like someone said, speedwise there isnt much in it at all & you can get a FF 172 for considerably cheaper than a 182

  Clio 182 :)
The Clio doesn't cost so much, apart from cambelt (big 5 years service)...

The best thing to do is to get a Clio that already has had all the work done ! ! !

And as said before, the car is worth every single penny, pleasure everytime you turn the key !

If you're gentle on the right pedal than it's about 9L / 60 miles, it's not so much for 182bhp !

Ok, ive really been looking into this A LOT!
My only other serious alternative to getting a clio, would be a type r.

So my question is simple: Why would I want a Clio over a type r? (OR vica versa!)

Reasons Im sticking to a clio so far:

- I can get a much better clio for the same price range.
- better economy/running costs
- I think it looks better :)
- VERY similar performance

For what it does the 1*2s are cheap as chips to run compared to other similar hatches, Type R is heavier on fuel

  Dirty E91
I ran my 182 for 3 years and on a weekly bais getting about 320 - 350 out of a tank, this included a 40 mile a day commute. The clio is pretty good on fuel for a hot hatch, sayin that if you drive it ioke you stole it you can see 250 from a tank, but just general driving will see 350+.

Serving was the big one for me especially the 36K one, about £300.
