Newbie from Birmingham already having problems with 1.2 clio

Hi all I'm a newbie from birmingham and I'm having problems with my 1.2 clio. Im getting the constant light on dash below the petrol one, rectangular with swiggly line, like a graph. It comes on not long after I start driving my car. But I lose power and it starts idling between 500 and 1500 jumping up and down until it stalls... I would really appreciate some help.

Have a look behind the engine block and see if there is a black metallic cover behind the engine block, if there is pull it off, chuck it away and wrap the no doubt now exposed wiring in some elctrical tape.
