Newbie question.

Hi guys interested in buying a 172, on 104k, Spoken to the seller has no idea if dephaser has been done. Last service had the cambelt done would this include dephaser? Sorry for what may be a stupid q. Thanks in advance Ross.

No wouldn't necessarily mean the dephaser had been done.

If it wasn't done by a competent garage either then it's probably best left alone, it's quite a specialist job.

Don't worry too much about the cambelt being done at a specialist. Worse case scenario is you buy it and have the timing checked by one of the specialists and corrected if needed. Also, the dephaser only needs doing if it's making a noise. It may well be fine and won't need changing for years to come.

It really isn't as big a job as people make out, and i'm sure there are plenty of competent garages that do the job well. It just happens that we only hear about the ones that have messed up.

If the rest of the car is perfect, or is exactly what you are after then I'd say go for it. Don't be put off by that one thing.

It's only £900 and you are worrying about the cambelt history! it's almost disposable at that sort of price.

Don't take this the wrong way, but If £900 is a lot of money to you, then I would advise you to buy something else. The RenaultSport cars aren't the cheapest of cars to run and if you can't afford to put good tyres on it, and keep on top of the servicing then you may as well buy a 1.2 Corsa.

I agree, had you have said it was 900 quid in the first place then everyone would have said get on it.

The first thing will be an insurance quote.
Then another one with all the modifications you hear of which you think you'll want. (want a massive, booming, chavtastic exhaust? Want to give it an undriveable suspension set-up? That kind of thing)
Compared to a C2, you'll want to brace your anus

Not in to Chavez kinda stuff. More subtle mods, nice sounding exhaust etc. Ye the c2 has run its course now I'm getting bored after 2yrs
