Don't rush into it.
I'm sure ukaskew (Chris) will back me on this one.
Absolutely, £290 will not be the final cost if you go with the D50. You will want (regardless of what you think at the moment) at least a 55-200mm telephoto zoom sooner or later, another £100+ gone.
That and the 18-55mm kit lens are surprisingly good, but won't really offer you anything spectacular over a decent super-zoom/bridge camera, and with that you won't have the hassle of changing lenses/dirty sensors etc. Might be worth looking for a second-hand Panasonic FZ20 or FZ30, I sold mine for in September for £250 but I took some superb photos with it. 2 years with that got me a long way into the world of photography, the pictures from that are still generating more interest than my new D50 efforts (only yesterday a
picture from my FZ20 days was used for a advertising brochure design)
The D50 is stunning but only really goes above and beyond a bridge camera if you are pretty serious about photography. I've spent £1000 on mine now, mainly through selling loads of stuff and pooling all Birthday/Christmas money together! I know very very few people who have bought a DSLR and still only have the kit lens.
