No claims bonus concidered on additional policies

I have 4 years NCB on the clio with one company,

Insured the BMW with Admiral but mentioned I have NCB used on another car with another company and that I would be having 0 years NCB on this BMW policy. The lad on the phone confirmed that was the case.

Got a phone call from them today asking if I was aware that I had no hire car on the policy. I explained I have 3 cars so don't need a hire car. He asked if I had NCB on other policies which I confirmed I did. He said to contact them later on with the details of the other policies and that they would be taken into concideration, and that I should receive a rebate. Result!

I hope I get a little back. I did always think that it should be taken into concideration as I could have the clio with 4 or 9+ for all they know so it should make a slight difference.

He did state it was something they haven't been doing for very long. Anyone else had much luck with this? I am not expecting it to make as much diff as if I used my NCB on the policy, but hopefully a little back for proving that I am accident free.

Its stupid that this hasn't always been the case. Surely NC is NC no matter what car its on? If you have been insured on a car for 9+ years and never claimed then you buy a fun car for the weekend then you are suddenly a different driver, who might make a claim?

Seems like another way for insurance companies to make money!

But well done for saving some money, who are you with for future reference?

Its Admiral that offered me to save money. Was really suprised actually as I started getting shirty with him thinking he was just trying to offer car hire.

Will report back later how much moolah they are giving me back.

I'm in a similar situation.

I have maximum NCB on my BMW, insured with Swift Cover.

Bought the Clio last October as the fun car and had to start all over again with zero NCB  It's insured with Admiral, so will very interested to hear if you get any money back!

Can't believe I'm treated as a different driver for the second car, but did you know that if you claimed on one of the policies, then you are suddenly treated as the same driver, as it would effect the NCB on the other car!

It's win, win for the insurance companies!!

A few companies (Sky Insurance included) will 'mirror' your NCB over to the second vehicle. This basicially means that a discount is given equivalent to the discount you would have got if you NCBwas free to use on the second vehicle. Effectively you start again at 0 years NCB on the second car but you will strat to build up NCB after the first year of claim free driving.

Hope that makes sense, it is hard to explain!

Excellent.

If they mirror them, and offer the same discount as if the NCB was used on both cars, why don't they allow them to be used on more than one vehicle.

I don't know if I am right in saying, but if I mirrored my 4 years NCB on the second vehicle, had an accident, I would go from 0 NCB to 0 NCB still, yet keep the 4 years on the original vehicle. Yet if they allowed me to use the same no claims bonus on both, and i crashed one, I would lose out on the 4 years to my name.

It is a good question and one hat I do not know the answer to!

Yes, if you had a claim in the second vehicle (insured using mirrored NCB) your NCB on the main vehcile would not be effected. You would need to disclose the claim though.

Being able to mirror NCB is a very useful tool, a lot of people do not realise that you can only build up NCB on one car at a time.

Thats interesting, only seems fair tho.

Suprises me to be honest!

Its fair, but not the kind of thing I would expect them to allow.

Oh. And Admiral never did bother to get back to me yesterday, so I will have to ring them at some point later today. In the mean time I will bring the quote up on confused and see how much cheaper my mirrored NCB would be. Thats if they mirror it the same way sky insurance do.

Makes sense Ollie. Zurich have said that although I wasn't the policy holder, because I was the main driver on the car they will give me 3 years NCB against my new policy under my name.

Just re ran a quote on their site to see what difference it would make with the no claims bonus, and it went up 400 quid. So ran exactly the same quote as I went through with, and its £500 more. So I won't be ringing them incase they want me to pay more!

Guess its the change of insurance groups?

Hi Mate, I guess it's a case of "quit whilst your ahead!" I'm convinced insurance companies just pluck numbers out of the sky anyway. Sounds like you where dealt a good hand in the first place.
