No reverse after transplant help!

Ever since I got a new engine put in my car I have not had reverse. I know reverse is there cos I used my old g/b. We have played with the linkage for ages and found that if you place a jack on the end of the linkage under the g/box and support it you can select reverse! as soon as the jack support is taken off no reverse! The linkage seems to be hitting the bottom of the box b4 it can select reverse from the car!

Any help would be great.

i don't no much about the mk1 clios mate but i know the newer ones if you disconnect the gear linkage it has to be adjusted when put back on to get all the gears,quite a sh**ty job tbh!i'm sure their will be some sort of procedure for these hopefully someone will know as i wouldnt like to guess havn't you got a haynes?

yeah it aint always right but its normally along the right lines if your totally stuck.surely theirs a bit in it then that tell you about gearbox linkage adjustment?when u disconnected the linkage did u mark the position for refitting?

Nope it wasnt marked. The haynes manual says somthing about a special renault tool.... Dont have that!

theirs normally a way of doing it whithout the special tool though that they normally tell you?what holds the linkage is it just a bolt,if it isn't put back on in the same position it was before you removed it you can end up missing gears,since its just reverse though try loosening it and moving it slighty anti-clockwise then if not clockwise and see if it helps

Thats been tried. The gearbox seems to be to low or something tho as its not geeting into reverse unless I lift the gearbox up a couple of mm. Can you adjust mounts?

Yes its just a nut that holds the linkage together.

the only thing i can think of for you mate is it use the jack the way you were doing to get it into reverse,get someone to sit in the car and hold it in reverse,then loosen of the bolt on the linkage make sure it feels like its in the right position then re-tighten it you get what i mean?

Yup we tried that

When the car is lowered again and then no gear like I said. You can get it so far into reverse but then hits a brick wall as if it does not exist!

Think I am going to check that the gearbox mount is in the right place/height.
