The first thing I would do is check the linkage is all ok.
It doesn't sound good though mate...
If its the circlip you'll have no drive at all..
Gearbox is fucked.
The 'best' option is to get yours refurbed IMO.
Although I have a 182 box that I would part with.
If you're refurbing id take it to Stephen brear in Leeds. He did my Rallye box and is very highly regarded.
Do you think it's as a result of the extra power? Is there anything you can do to get a stronger box if that's the case.
Best option is to get yours refurbished, cheapest option is to stick a second hand one in. If I was in your position I'd be getting a refurb, you never know how long a second hand box will last.Cheers pal, what would you say is the best option, refurb or second hand box?

I had exactly the same thing happen in January. All was normal when I left home and 50 miles later at destination 2nd had gone missing!!Does anyone have any ideas?
Does it sound like a second hand box time, or does it sound like it could be refurbished?
I have just been round to my garage and sat in the car with it ticking over, you can put it in second and sit without the clutch pressed in, its like you are sat in neutral, all other gears are fine with no crunching etc, it even sits in the 2nd gear position as it should also with no crunching or funny noises, its just like a ghost has come along and taken my second gear out with no other symptoms.
Thanks.

My garage dropped the box and found when removing the n/s driveshaft that one of the three bearings on the end had lost all 36 needle rollers which were somewhere inside the box. Sent box to specialists for rebuild but they reported that too much damage to casing to repair so had to get another box.
Sound like you may have suffered the same problem, would like to hear how you get on.
You may need to get a new driveshaft as well :grimacing:Cheers mate, I might just get a second hand box.
I'll let you know thanks for the reply
Already pn'd, thanks for the link.
...and driveshaft lol.You may need to get a new driveshaft as well :grimacing:
It's the dog gear on the gear itself that's come adrift mate. Very easy repair to do but it does mean the box needs to come apart. Your looking at about £160-£170 in parts though just to do that particular job. I know these gearboxes intimately! Lol!
It's demise has definitely been caused by the boost as well. Mainly the torque part of the boost!
Ref my post above, Interesting to know that, do you think from your experience that the needle rollers caused the issue in my case? And would you expect them to cause such damage to the casing as to render it unsuitable for rebuilding? Just me being suspicious :grinning:It's the dog gear on the gear itself that's come adrift mate. Very easy repair to do but it does mean the box needs to come apart. Yeah it'll be fine mate. Just give it a bit in 1st gear then bypass 2nd and go straight into 3rd. Easy as that.Excellent thanks for that mate great help that, I've bought a 2nd hand box on 75k which is supposedly in good working order for less that it would of cost me for those parts, so ill get it fitted and see how I get on, if it does it again ill have to upgrade the box.
Would the car be ok to drive to get fixed, or would you get it on a trailer? About 15 miles to my local Renault specialists.
Thanks for the input mate

If it lost all 36 needle rollers, that's the main diff bearing that failed. I would imagine that when they were floating around inside the box, there were a fair few of them getting between gear teeth and wreaking havoc tbh! It could easily force the shafts apart and damage the casing without any shadow of doubt mate.Ref my post above, Interesting to know that, do you think from your experience that the needle rollers caused the issue in my case? Yeah it'll be reet. Like you say though, just take it steady.Sound, so it shouldn't crumble to bits as long as I take it steady?
Thanks again.
@MrTom let me know if you want your original box stripping down for a full diagnosis. I have some 2nd hand parts available to do the repairs.
Sorry mate I've not got the time to do the swap unfortunately. It was more of a suggestion for you to have a spare in stock really.Gutted mate I've bought a 2nd hand box from budgie on here, ill pay you if you swap my box over and you can keep mine to maybe repair and sell on?
Ahh right that would be great if you could, ill pm you when iv had my box fitted and take it from there :smile:Sorry mate I've not got the time to do the swap unfortunately. It was more of a suggestion for you to have a spare in stock really.
