No second gear

  RB Clio 182
Hi, coming home tonight steady up to a roundabout put in 2nd and no drive, tested it, every gear goes in fine, no crunches even second, it goes in second as normal but theres no dive, its basically like its in neutral when in 2nd.

Any help,thanks.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Does it sound like a second hand box time, or does it sound like it could be refurbished?

I have just been round to my garage and sat in the car with it ticking over, you can put it in second and sit without the clutch pressed in, its like you are sat in neutral, all other gears are fine with no crunching etc, it even sits in the 2nd gear position as it should also with no crunching or funny noises, its just like a ghost has come along and taken my second gear out with no other symptoms.

Thanks.

The first thing I would do is check the linkage is all ok.

It doesn't sound good though mate...

I know mate 😧

Im going to go jack up the car in a bit and check the linkage, i dont think it will be that tho as it engages all gears fine even second, theres just no drive in that gear tho, i hope its something simple but if its not its all a part of the fun

I have been reading things about the circlip, what would be the outcome if this pops off, could it be this?

  RB Clio 182
If its the circlip you'll have no drive at all..

Cheers, i have just done some more searching on the circlip and it seems the 182's dont use them?

I know my inner cv boot is split on the drivers side, could this cause any gearbox problems? I temporary fixed it with a boot but you need a new driveshaft as they are built in them.

The 'best' option is to get yours refurbed IMO.

Although I have a 182 box that I would part with.

Mmmmm, decisions decisions, i just dont want to go and buy a new box if it could be a simple fix, i guess i will just have to let a specialist take a look.

Ill be in touch about the box mate definitely, is it in good condition with no crunches or whines etc?

How much would you let it go for George? I would probably pick it up tbh, your only about a hour away.

Do you think it's as a result of the extra power? Is there anything you can do to get a stronger box if that's the case.

If you're refurbing id take it to Stephen brear in Leeds. He did my Rallye box and is very highly regarded.

Thanks for that Jim.

It probably is mate yes, although im not too sure whats wrong with it atm, its doing my box in :tonguewink:

There is the 02m box that people are upgrading to, but i cant quite stretch to around the 2k mark at the moment or whatever are supplied and fitted

It will deffo be something ill do in the future tho if i keep the car.

Cheers pal, what would you say is the best option, refurb or second hand box?
Best option is to get yours refurbished, cheapest option is to stick a second hand one in. If I was in your position I'd be getting a refurb, you never know how long a second hand box will last.

I had exactly the same thing happen in January. All was normal when I left home and 50 miles later at destination 2nd had gone missing!!
My garage dropped the box and found when removing the n/s driveshaft that one of the three bearings on the end had lost all 36 needle rollers which were somewhere inside the box. Sent box to specialists for rebuild but they reported that too much damage to casing to repair so had to get another box.
Sound like you may have suffered the same problem, would like to hear how you get on.

Cheers mate, I might just get a second hand box.

I'll let you know thanks for the reply :)

It's the dog gear on the gear itself that's come adrift mate. Very easy repair to do but it does mean the box needs to come apart. Your looking at about £160-£170 in parts though just to do that particular job. I know these gearboxes intimately! Lol!
It's demise has definitely been caused by the boost as well. Mainly the torque part of the boost!

Excellent thanks for that mate great help that, I've bought a 2nd hand box on 75k which is supposedly in good working order for less that it would of cost me for those parts, so ill get it fitted and see how I get on, if it does it again ill have to upgrade the box.

Would the car be ok to drive to get fixed, or would you get it on a trailer? About 15 miles to my local Renault specialists.

Thanks for the input mate

Ref my post above, Interesting to know that, do you think from your experience that the needle rollers caused the issue in my case? And would you expect them to cause such damage to the casing as to render it unsuitable for rebuilding? Just me being suspicious :grinning:

Yeah it'll be fine mate. Just give it a bit in 1st gear then bypass 2nd and go straight into 3rd. Easy as that.

If it lost all 36 needle rollers, that's the main diff bearing that failed. I would imagine that when they were floating around inside the box, there were a fair few of them getting between gear teeth and wreaking havoc tbh! It could easily force the shafts apart and damage the casing without any shadow of doubt mate.

@MrTom let me know if you want your original box stripping down for a full diagnosis. I have some 2nd hand parts available to do the repairs.

Gutted mate I've bought a 2nd hand box from budgie on here, ill pay you if you swap my box over and you can keep mine to maybe repair and sell on?
