No wonder sports are quick...

with 168 to171bhp per ton!! I dont think there is anything in its class that can match that apart from a Pulsar GTiR. Not suprising how many things we catch out on the roads really is it? People are amazed when you tell them its a 2.0 litre engine in a small car. VA VA VOOM!!! :D

When people look at mine they usually say "Nice, (looks at door badge) 2.0 litre engine in a Clio, Christ I bet that goes some".

Yes thank you, its not too slow. :D

Thats why I never went for a 106GTI. Hardly a Hot Hatch more like luke warm lol ;)
dont get too smug, ive seen a 106 GTi keep with a cup all the way to 100, admitedly it was modded but only the same as the cup ( exhaust, IK etc )

Yer, under good conditions the cup will win everytime, but its not just down to raw power, its the launch, drivers skill etc. It really did happen, must be a quick 106 GTI coz i can usually see them off in my 16v. But theres always freaks, look at craggys saxo

166 bhp per ton for a type r Rich-D I know its only 2-4bhp but still!! Quick cars though ive had a go with a type r before, but 2.5 secs slower than the 182 on top gear round the track :D

Yep, wouldnt underestimate the little 106 Gtis.. I got beaten by one at crail.. it was very modified though and suprising a lot of bigger cars aswell.

Rich, the CTR is in the class above the Clio.

my best mate has a 106 gti, when i first got my 172 his wasnt modded at all performance wise, except a non-std backbox, and i could leave him for dust, he has since fitted, new manifold, decat, full system, viper ik and it can almost just about keep up with me, (although we havent tested properly)

I wouldnt sl*g the 106 GTI - bloody fast and not much in it between one of them a RS Clio.

Never owned one due to not being able to get comfortable in it! Think Im too tall - 62 - but am very comfortable in my Clio now.

Its worth remembering though that the 106 GTi is very basic.. the build of the little pugs isnt very good (and thats comming from a clio owner lol) the reason they are so light is cause there aint exactly much too them.

Cracking cars though, I looked at a few of them before deciding on the clio.

Ive got a 130bhp TU engined 106... with s/s decat, scorpion gpA, manifold 4-2-1 daztek system mapped out... running 150bhp partially stripped weighing around 930kg... I dont have too many problems with 172s, although it is close

I would have had a 106GTi only I struggled with the close pedals. Ended up with a Rover 200 Vi instead. This was back when the 106 GTi had just come out.

Yeah but 172s dont have 172bhp per tonne do they? I thought its 172bhp at the the fly!?

They surely weigh more than a tonne!
The 172 & Cup are 170bhp (172ps) and the 182s are 179bhp (182ps).

Weight wise >>>

mk1 172 - 1035kg (164bhp/tonne)
mk2 172 - 1110kg (153bhp/tonne)
Cup - 1021kg (166bhp/tonne)
182 - 1080kg (166bhp/tonne)

197bhp / 1204kg = 164bhp/tonne

So only 2 less than a Cup or 182, but I have more than 197bhp... ;)

LOL

The Top Gear times are hardly comparative, try other tests and see...

I had a Cup before the Civic, loved it, know exactly how quick they are!

Neither is a Pulsar GTi-R but that was named above!

However, the 172/182 and CTR are after the same slice of the market...

Size wise yes, but they sell to the same people, so 172/182, CTR, Cooper-S, etc.. are all aiming at the same sector.

Yes, but in the UK we dont use bhp (Din) do we...

When people say "100bhp" they want 100bhp, not 100ps or 100bhp (Din)

Aye, only becuase the car manufacturers are now quoting this...

Makes fook all difference anyway, as 170 vs 172 is not noticable!

p.s mine had 200bhp as standard than! :p

Nah, I am impartial...

Had the Cup, got a CTR, but also got an R5 Turbo (had 2 of them) and a 1.4 Clio parked on the drive, so unlikely to be anti-Renault! ;)
