Not What Blu-Ray Needs

This could be the catalyst to really bring cheap standalone HD-DVD players to the masses, something that Blu-Ray seems a fair way off at the moment, read a couple more articles saying standalone HD-DVD players with 1080p output will prob be available for under £200 by July and a snip over £100 by Sept, and the drive for the 360 for arround £85 by Aug

And you dont think they will release simmilar priced blue-ray players along the same timeline ?

This could win the war. Budget players for house holds with there NEW HD TV's. VHS was cheaper and look how that did over betamax - also p**n industry chose VHS :)

Blue-ray might do the same - but first ones to do it will be the winner.

Sony on Tuesday denied claims that it was preventing the p**n industry from using the Blu-ray high-definition format developed by the consumer electronics giant.

I think Sony have stated that they will not manufacture BD p**n disks at any of their own plants but they have not banned others from doing so.

Anyone that buys a standalone player at the moment is a bit silly imo. Might as well see how these dual format devices are going to develop as you'll have the best of both worlds.

I think currently the cheapest BD player is best part of £600 compared to HD circa £300, also no plans in place to change production until later this year, they also for some reason have longer build time and production costs, add to this Sony's prestige/arrogance for being against being perceived to offer budget products then it will take another company to stick their neck out
