Anyone reccommend a good diagnostics tool for home use (using laptop) and where to get one/how much to pay?? cheers

On your car nope. Only later Mk2's were OBD2 compliant as it was law but even then its Renault protocalls which are different.
yeh most cars (petrol) made after 2000 should be OBD2 compatible. there are a few models iv found that say they have been tested on renaults so they must work...Renault uses ISO i think?

Are you sure it took 8 months for the light to come on the first time.
If I had to reset it every 6-8 months I wouldn't mind.
Call this guy at www.talktomycar.co.uk he is very knowledgable been shifting this kind of stuff for years.. And he's a mate of mine so I know he won't try and rip you off...
will these scan tools be able to tell me if my fuel pump or coilpack is broken, i'm not finding anyone who can help me out atm and my car is stuck on my driveway :S
