Oil filter?

I got an 'oil filter' from Halfrauds, but it's just the bit which looks like an air filter kind of (sorry about the explanation ha), just wondering if this is the right/only thing that I need when changing the oil, and not the big metal thing.

i never understand why people go and buy cheap aftermarket filters, just go to Renault mate, there under a tenner and its built for the job

what :S take a picture lol
I've got JUST the yellow thing on this picture, but mine's a little longer:

It's becaust Renault are a rip off mate. I went to Halfrauds because I cba with the hassle of trying to be ripped off/them giving me the wrong price/part.

So do I need all that's in the above picture, or can I just use the filtery bit?

you've just bought the paper element - some filter canisters can be taken apart so that you just renew the element. what's your motor? do you just need a sealed filter?

But thats just it fella, they are a few quid more expensive because they are the right part, you say you cba with the hassle of being given the right part, but you buy from Halfords then have to ask if you have the right bits? i mean i can understand if you were replacing a filter every week as the cost would mount up, but about 2 or 3 quid extra every 10,000 miles it surely would be worth getting the genuine item?

It's a ph2 1.2 16v matey. I'm not sure what I need tbh - just wondering if I only need to renew this or the whole canister :)

I'm not clued up on this kinda thing tbh!

I suppose bud, I thought they'd be the same though and didn't even know Renault sold them. I'm only asking if it's the right part because I don't know anything about changing oil, I'm only young :dapprove:

if it was defo listed against your model (and Halfords haven't mucked up the codes or anything), they probably offer two types - renewable element (what you've got) and a sealed canister. you could use the element you've bought if your existing canister can be taken apart, but the sealed one's not going to be much more expensive and will be a lot simpler to fit

no no no, thats what you get on a 1.2 16v. Its very strange as usually its not just the filter bit.

You have to undo the oil filter, take out the old paper filter bit and put the new one in, with new seals.

Much like the newer 206's then!

Its a really strange way to do it tbh, much nicer just to screw a new unit in. Although im not sure if that can be done on the 1.2 16v

As said thats the right one for a D4F lump, keep the plastic housing and just change the paper element. When you get one from renault you get the whole thing though including a housing.

  Lots of Alfas
I thought on the later phases they changed the filter on the D4F and D7F. The mk2ph1s had the paper type, Im sure later on Renault changed it to the newer type.

oo, looks like I'm right then! :rasp:

Thanks for the advice lads, been a great help. Will crack on with this tomorrow!

Ph2 is 100% a paper element in a plastic housing, unsure on the Ph3 off the top of my head.

Couldn't get the bleedin thing off even with the car jacked up and me right under it, it was on too tight and rusted a bit so couldn't unscrew it and the chain tool just kinda dented it :dapprove: any advice?

A lot of new cars use a paper style element now. It cuts down on servicing costs coz you aint throwing away a big lump of metal everytime.
