old v6 versus new v6

Mark 2 is better sorted in handling and the engine is now delivering the kind of power that it should.
Is it worth paying around 16k for a Mark 1? Dont see why not - you soon learn the Mark 1s characteristics and it is not the dangerous car that some magazines would have you believe. Insurance is an issue but it would be for the Mark 2 as well - I pay around £830 fully comp, protected NCB + declared modifications.
Renaults next step should be to address the weight issue, stop trying to market it as a GT and lose all the creature comforts with a "club sport" version with no trim, radio or any of that crap - just a focused v6 Clio! (Please)

Probably only to me! but I am a selfish bugger so thats good enough for me.
In all seriousness though they do need to sort out the weight problem with them. They are too heavy and this plus the weight distribution, as much as anything else, is a major contributor to its handling characteristics. At the end of the day it is a 2 seater mid engine hatchback that weighs more than a BMW M3 which has 4 seats, a boot etc, etc
I still love my Mark 1 though it just needs to lose some fat!
The old one just didnt have a good reputation. I imagine they will become quite hard to sell. The new one though has great reviews and the all important Clarkson factor. Whether you like him or not, when he says its one of his top ten cars of all time that is going to do a lot for a cars reputation.

The guys at www.nology.com seem happy with there MK1
Nology started by putting on the actual wheels that are used on the Clio Cup cars. 17 “ O.Z.s’, 7x17 in the front and 8.5x17 in the rear. Of course the tires had to be the new Yokohama AVS ES100. In the front they are 215/45s and in the rear they are 245/40s. These two modifications alone improved the handling tremendously. Next was the suspension, which was much more difficult than expected. The stock handling is already impeccable and the Yokohama tires and O.Z. wheels made further improvement almost impossible. It took the knowledge of the engineers over at Eibach with their treasure chest of motorsport parts, to take the handling to a level that even surpasses racecar roadability. Several sets of special Eibach springs were needed to finally get it right. The result? We like it, we really like it.

Mark 1 handling can be improved by putting better shocks/dampers and moving away from the factory fitted Pilot Sports. Whether this will make it as well sorted as the Mark 2 is debatable - you can fit the Mark 2 rear subframe to the Mark 1 which apparently helps alot.
I dont know where Nology got their Mark 1 from but I would not describe the handling as standard as impeccable!
Mark 1s are only marginaly more powerful in real terms than Cups/172 and they, without modification, would not keep up with a Cup round a twisty track. Thing is, it is not just a numbers game - part of the fun of the Mark 1/2 is that it is an oversteering, RWD v6. It is a challenge to drive it properly quick but when you do get it right it is rewarding.
When I brought mine I test drove a Cup, CTR and Mini Cooper S and although this is probably inviting a flame war - IMHO: the Mini Cooper S was the best handling but was woefully underpowered, the CTR had 2nd class post between the steering wheel and the front wheels, Cup was good but nothing could compare to the first time you drive along the road with the noise of the v6 where the rear seats should be.
I must say I am not too sure I like the look of the front of the mk2.
There is an awful lot of black plastic.
Mk2 is indeniably faster and handles better, but where is the fun in a car you dont have to fight now and again???????
I love my mark1.
