OMEX serial cable

ok so the OMEX 600 ecu i have has a serial cable connector on the front of it.

trouble i have is i dont have a pc with a serial port on it so its not a case of buying a serial-serial cable to connect the 2.

so how do i go about connecting this omex to a pc?
ive been told by some computer geeks that serial is a bit outdated now and isnt put on any new computers so im a bit unsure

ive seen on ebay you can get serial-usb cables. will this do the job?

cheers

Word of warning check up to see which USB converters work on various forums as the cheaper ones are notorious for not working.

No mate but wont matter.

Just go in store and ask, they all know the crack. Plenty to choose from.

got one from Maplins for £25. Lasted a week and it's never worked since. Now I get them direct from Canems whenever I order an ECU and it's under £15. Works perfectly with every ECU I've tried it on so far (Canems, Omex, GEN90)

do canems have a website? and can i get one or is it something that only businesses can get?

The USB ones are shite

If you're using a laptop it should have a PCMCI slot - I bought a PCMCI to serial card for about £20 - they act EXACTLY like a serial port - you can set the baud rate, parity - everything
Works perfectly with my Omex 600 :)

PCMCIA is the term you mean mate.
And I agree totally, its actually the same as a serial port then write down at the hardware level rather than going through a convertor, its the only way to ensure that you have an RS232 port that will work on ALL devices.
Some of the USB ones are better than others, but ultimately none of them can fully replicate the functionality of a proper RS232 port the way that a PCMCIA one can.
