  Clio 172
Hi

New to this forum this is only my second post.

Have been toying with the idea of getting a 172, but just been offered a valver but…..

Story behind this valver goes, it was my dads pride and joy for many years didn’t take great care with it but looked after it sufficiently and never had any major problems (with over 100k on the clock) until the gear box went about 2 years ago so had a brand new gear box along with clutch and a few other bits, its had the cam belt changed in the past 10k, and as usual with the clios of this age the back arches were rotting away so he had those done about 18 months ago. Now for the past year its been sitting on our drive wasting away.

So my question is 1) Would anybody touch this car (the old man is getting MOT’d) 2) If you would touch it how much would you offer for it (the car has a few car park dents in it although it is totally standard with the standard gold alloys) 3) If I did decide to take it how much would I be looking at to get the engine rebuilt/reconditionend?

Hope he passes ;) LoL :clown:

Get a pic up so we can determine if it's a williams or a valver! We can also work out a price then.

re: the engine, if it's still running fine don't worry about getting it rebuilt - they've been stripped down at 250k miles and shown little signs of wear so if looked after they'll run forever.

If however it's screwed, it's often cheaper to get a secondhand engine and put it in than get it rebuilt. Secondhand engine + fitting = £750ish (at a guess), rebuild = £1400 from Stan at APD, probably more at Nick Hill.

I was sure they werent after market as ive seen these wheels on a few valvers, oh well i stand corrected.thanks for clearing that 1 up.

Not sure how much to offer tbh. like i said a few little dints and knocks so id wanna sort them out get it to as near a1 condition as poss. i drove this car a few times (before its been stood) and just love the fun factor behind it havent drove the 172 though. the valver just put a smile on my face the few times i did drive it.

  valver
they could of put williams wheels on there?
tbh though if you can afford to buy/insure the 172 id take that over a valver anyday. the little valvers are great fun. and the seat position is better than the 1#2 i feel. but 1#2 are far superior and a lot newer.
then all you have to decide is full fat or cup.

  Clio 172
if i went for the 172 it'd have to be the cup i think never had a car with air con/climate control so won't miss that, but this wil mean saving the pennies for a few more months like you said they're newer so think the heads gonna over rule the heart on this one.

when he comes to sell the valver ill get it in the for sale section with some pics and more details should be in the next 6-8 wks.

cheers

  Mk2 1.2 Campus
You should get the 16v, they're great cars and as long as you look after it there's no reason why it wouldn't be just as reliable as a 172

Rear arches are a massive bonus. If the car is for fun then a MK1 is better than a 172. The engine may not need to be reconditioned and even so the most cost effective way of doinf that would be to wait on ebay/CS for a cheap low miler and dump it in.
Go for the Mk1. I'd value it at 1200-1300 at 95k with perfect rear arches and a very good interior. maybe a little less depending on these parking dents.

as said the gold wheels are williams wheels, not standard 1.8 16v wheels. the williams is a 2.0 16v (stroked 1.8 essentially).
Williams wheels are 15"x7J and 1.8 16v wheels are 15"x6.5J

Good luck whatever you do and welcome

Why is the 172 superior?? I don't see that it is definitively better. Still reckon the mk1 is more driver focused. The 172 is better if your gonna be covering miles and miles, but then why would you choose a clio for that?

all this coming from the man who just gave up his valver for a 172! lol

lol he is getting on a bit, a few squeaks and rattles but he should get through it!!!

found a valver for sale on pison heads with the same wheels these are silver the ones on my dads are gold heres the link

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/396864.htm

see what you think.

If the wheels are the same in this advert but painted gold, then they are the standard Speedline Turbines that came with the 1.8 16v, only painted gold

At last a man who talks sense !!:)

I swear that some folk don't read what people write, they even have the same car as the dude is talking about ffs

He put - these are the wheels it has on it but his are gold (then put up a valver on turbines) then people went - yeah sounds like williams alloys if they're gold :S

I thought maybe I had missed something as I was reading through the thread.

Back to the original question though, if the 1.8 16v clio passes it's MOT and is in good running order then save your money and buy it instead of a 172, you will enjoy every second of it.

Although maybe get the Turbines refurbed and polished instead of the gold!!! :nono:

no ive still got the valver. performance wise it is superior no arguments, lets not hi jack the thread arguing which mark is best.
