Optimax/unleaded av. price difference

Just out of interest, whats the prices for unleaded and Optimax where you stay? i.e. whats the average price difference per litre between normal unleaded and Optimax?

Im trying to calculate how much extra Optimax would cost over the course of a years motoring!

Shell optimax is 86.9p

Think Tesco/Asda unleaded is 78.9/79.9p or something.....

10p a litre round me. Complete farsical rip-off! Luckily the value rocket fuel is only 4p a litre more than nirmal unleaded! muhahah.

You need to remember to take into account the fact that Optimax claims to give better fuel economy - cant find actual figures anywhere, but BP Ultimate claims to give an average of 3.5% better fuel economy.

Over-simplified maths says that this partly offsets the approximately 6% extra you pay per litre, so youre then paying a net 2.5% increase on your fuel bills over the year. Filling up once a week all year at £35 a time will then cost approximately £45 extra over the year.

And thats probably well worth the extra performance you get from Optimax!

Cheers, I was working it out on there being a 5p per litre difference using the following figures:
12,000 miles per year (= 230 miles per week)
12,000 miles @ 33mpg = 364 gallons/year = 1653 litres/year

Normal unleaded (84.9p per litre) = £1,403 per year
Optimax (89.9p per litre) = £1,486 per year

Im thinking I might just use optimax all the time! For the sake of £80 a year I think its worth it - not much when you look at it like that. Should be justification for anyone questioning the cost of Optimax. Now Ive just got to find somewhere selling it

Optimax has never given me better fuel economy and I monitor it most weeks for work. For 10p a litre more expensive on a full fill up that would have to be quite a mpg difference!

Optimax defo gives better Mpg over the others. Used that tesco redbull stuff and its really does go better, but the MPG dropped like a stone. Ill be sticking to optimax as i cant the tesco stuff round here.

Plus it runs smoother on the higher octane stuff, 97/95 is as lumpy as Vanessa Feltss thighs

Stu - yeah I know it gives slightly better mpg. I was getting abour 2-3mpg better using optimax compared to 95ron.

So, comparing unleaded @ 33mpg with Optimax @ 35mpg:

Normal unleaded (84.9p per litre, 33mpg, 1653 litres used to cover 12k miles) = £1,403 per year
Optimax (89.9p per litre, 35mpg, 1558 litres used to cover 12k miles) = £1,401 per year!!!

Is that f*cking right?!

F*ck me, even if Optimax/eqv. was 10p a litre more than normal 95ron, assuming you got 2mpg better using Optimax, it would still only cost you an extra £70 over the course of a year! (12k miles, 35mpg, 1558 litres, 94.9p/litre = £1476!). Well worth it.

always used optimax, last week had an fully synth oil change (@ 20k miles).

yesterday i had just enough in the tank to get to work and back and managed 47.2 mpg ! that was over 60 mile trip and about 20 mile of that was a constant 40 mph roadworks, nearly all the rest 70-80 on motorway.

this car constantly ceases to amaze !!

Looks right to me - youve worked out a 6.06% increase in fuel economy for only a 5.89% increase in cost - the 0.17% difference is about £2.39 saving over the year on your figures.

Ive not had my 182 long enough to check, but if youre definitely getting that improvement in fuel economy, its stupid not to use Optimax!

Unless you have to go 20 miles out of your way each time you fill up at a Shell station.....

Im basing mine on a 172, but same difference! Im running 95ron at the moment and getting on average 33mpg - Im going to experiment with Optimax for a while and measure my mpg and see what happens. Plus, most importantly, 98ron gives the full 172hp from the engine! (Ive heard you loose a couple using 95ron).

Ive found a garage selling it nearby (according to Shell website) and will only add approx 4 miles to my journey home. Optimax is go!

In the midlands and everywhere else I have filled up with Optimax it was 5p more a litre at launch and crept up to 6p.

Always get more mpg with Optimax or Sainsburys SUL. With Sainsburys SUL only a penny more than their 95ron round here always use that now. Savings over Optimax can go towards proper additives like Forte stuff.

Theres no Shell on the routes I drive locally, but Johnny Sainsburys 97 RON vs 95 RON is 82.9 vs 80.9.

I use the 97 (shock, horror, disbelief) If I had a Tesco that did 99, Id be using that, but sadly, my local store just does 95 (at about 74.9 after the 5p a litre off) Still using Johnnies for now, as its on the way back from work and gives that little extra oomph.

Shell Unleaded 84.9p
Shell Optimax 90.9p

So, based on 12k miles a year, and assuming Optimax gives me 2mpg improvement (33mpg vs 35mpg), itll only cost £13 extra per year (£1,403 vs £1,416).

Kinda justifies Optimax to me now!

(dont have Sainsburys or Tesco rocket fuel anwhere near me unfortunately)
