optimax...

Whats the diffrence with this optimax compared to normal unleaded? and can i mix it with my existing unleaded ?

not much, its jsut normal unleaded with its extra detergets AFAIK.

I dont personally use it.

Chris, dont you work for shell or something?

I used to work for the muppets. Nothign special in a garage. But we got info to spout out at the neighbours.

Its just normal unleaded with octane boosters. Reverts back to normal 95 ron after a few days.

Yeah, Optimax has a pretty short shelf life. I use occasionally as I like the idea of using a quality fuel, but Id never buy it for a car like the 16v for any performance benefits.

Ive never used anything other than Optimax from the day I picked the car up. Renault recommend 98 ron for the 172 for the best results, and Ive always made sure I use decent fuel so I figured Id stick with it. As far as I know there are no other fuels with a ron rating that high?

Id heard it degrades, but not quite as quickly as mentioned here. I suppose it depends how long its been in the tanks, as once its in my car its gone in 7 days

Its got to be easier than planning all long journeys to take in Shell Stations. Ill have a private space at the ones near me the amount of times I fill up.

I remember reading on Scoobynet about the 101 rated stuff that Mycroft mixes up for his Lexus Soarer!! Apparently its quite a well known mix. Think Ill stick to the pumps myself.

Mycroft knows his stuff.

He uses a mix of SUL and Toluene.

Another fuel additive he was using was XYLENE and REDEX.

On the Optimax front, I cant feel the difference between SUL and Optimax, but Im sure I could feel the difference between Premium and Super!

Mycrofts posts keep me occupied for hours when Im having a slow day at work.

My last car (company car) was a 2.0 litre Focus Zetec. I tried a couple of tanks of Optimax to see if I could notice a difference. It didnt feel any more powerful, just a little more responsive at low revs. Ive a friend with an Impreza Turbo who swapped to Optimax and there was a noticable improvement, again mainly just in response at lower revs. That was compared to standard unleaded though.

I dont know if I get any benefit from using the stuff as thats all Ive ever put in the Clio!!

Mycroft?
Hes a VERY knowledgeable bloke on a few Japanses car forums. His posts and debates are always very interesting.

in my turbo it seems to do better miles 160 miles to £20 as apose to 140 on the normal stuff maybe its coincidence with my driving but it seems to always be that way

my mk1 172 seems to do approx 2mpg more with optimax than super market stuff, also idles a lot nicer and picks up cleaner, mind you they do recommend 98 octane for the 172 anyway, definate difference though!

I filled up with it earlier in the valver and im sure it was quicker off the forecourt, which proves its all in your head cos there would still of been sh*t loads of normal unleaded in the pipes before it got any of that stuff...

Doesnt it say in the renault handbook there is no benefit using higher octane fuel at all ( some cars, scoobys etc, are meant to run on higher octane cos thats what they have in japan)

i still use it when i stop at a shell garage, its good stuff... but then my car always feels quicker when i wash it so like i said, all in your head.

afterthought...

when i did MX i always used it on my bike and it made one hell of a difference, rev to the moon on the stuff - so it is good stuff, but maybe no benefit in your car.

Thats because you didnt pay for it!!!!!!!!!! ;)

My 1995 Renault Clio manual says 95 or 98ron is recommended for the entire petrol fuel injected range.

Its 91-98ron for the unleaded carb models and 91-97ron for 4-star/unleaded carb models (not sold in the UK AFAIK).

what RON will Octane booster bring SUL up to?
depends what and how much u use
Many bottles will say they will raise the Octane number by x points (e.g. 4 points).

This means 0.4 of a RON - be careful.
