I think for the 16v (which I have is about 6k). After 5.5k the power curve falls with an ever increasing gradient, yet a change at 5.5 will mean the next gear is going to come in at about 4 which will be too low for optimum.
its a 1.2, just have fun in it dont go all tec like, next it will be if i take the jack ot of my car i would be 0.01 secs quicker, i have a 1.2 8v that hasnt even got a rev counter bt i dont care lol,
lol my old 1.2 used to hate being reved even to 4k it was like CHANGE!!! was a reet shock when i got the 172 as insted it was going MORE MORE CUMMMONNNN GRRRRRRR
Mine revs quite freely all the way to the limiter, does a ton in 4th when its nice and warm. I rarely ever take it over 5k though, and round town it rarely sees 3.5k.
lol. peak preformance from a 1.2! i got the same but its 16v, jus thrash it to just before the limiter and have a laugh!if i dont thrash it, it barely moves!lol

If im really giving it some (trying to catch up/keep a decent distance from my mates) then the most i will give it is 5000rpm, then it sounds like its not far away from happily throwing a piston in my face. Day to day driving, 4500rpm is the optimum rpm ill give it.
You need to get it on a RR realy and shift points chnage with what gear your in as you want to maximimse power all the time also depends if your racing the 1/4 mile etc as sometimes it better going well out the power band rarther than change up.
Changing up at maximum power isn't often the best idea.
Looking at the rev counter every time you change gear is a bit sad, just a thought but why not change gear when the engine sound is telling you to? and in a 1.2 8v that is WAY before 5k revs.
So youre trying to catch up with a mate in front in of you, eyes firmly stuck on the rev counter at 5.5k revs doing about 45-50mph and you havent yet realised that youre mate in front has hit the anchors as the car in front of him has performed an emergency stop.
Just a wee scenario but entirely possible by the looks of some previous posts.
Its a 1.2 8v doesnt matter how much revs you give it it's never gonna be quick, it wont rev past 6k so taking it to 5500 every gear change is doing it no good whatsoever.
