Orange/Vodafone Sim (new Phone) unlock?

Just got myself a new phone im curently on Vodafone but the phone is Orange,
Put the Vodafone Sim in and didnt work, can i unlock it myslef or do i have to take it to Orange / Vodafone shop so they can do it ? around how much would it cost to do ?
