Original Reanult Alpine CD Changer ??

Only had the car 2 weeks and upon giving it a thorough clean i noticed it still had the original cd changer, so have a few questions on this

1) do they only power up via the head unit,

and 2) can these be fitted to an aftermarket head unit ie. sony
