i got a 1.2 ph1

and the car dosent go into first gear, unless the car is pretty much stopped.
gets anoying cos i have to pull away in 2nd gear alot.
when crawling upto a junction with no need to stop for example.

is this normal? its just neen MOT'd and nothing was mentioned.

can i do any damage to my clutch by pulling of in 2nd gear quite frequently?

Some cars go in easier, my 172 is pretty hard to stick in 1st whilst rolling, What speed are we talking here? Tbh you only need 1st for the first 5mph!

im just worried im damaging my clutch when using second at low speends.
like say your coming upto a roundabout and you slow right down, but you dont need to stop.
it wont go into first, so id have to pull away in 2nd. high revs and slow clutch.

It depends how slow were talking, if your going that slow you've almost stopped then it should go into 1st. As mentioned i also give mine a quick blip, specially when its cold as the gearbox feels like its from a tractor!

Have you changed the gearbox oil? I bet its never been done and can make a big difference sometimes.

Il +1 that! My 172 will not go into first sometimes if im slightly rolling.. always has done!

Technically you can do what 30 maximum in first before you change but pretty much have to be stationary to engage first gear.

in a 1.2 its a bit more than 5mph trust me

blip the throttle as has been said. matching engine speed to gear box speed so it slips in easier. used to do it alllllllllllllllllllll the time in my old car haha, clio isn't as bad unless its cold

I never "go back" to 1st unless I'm at a complete stop in any car, otherwise I use 2nd. It should pull cleanly in 2nd without needing to slip the clutch unless you're trying to race away or something.
