Overheating or temp sensor problem or other?

I was driving home tonight dropping someone off at home about 6 miles away, it was fine on the way there but on the way back the temp gauge kept going up to the Max so the STOP light and the coolant temp light would come on but then the temp gauge would go down and the lights would disappear. It did this many times going up and down.

What could it be? Any help would be appreciated..

Have you checked under the bonnet for coolant levels?? If thats ok chances are its a fault temp sensor.
