Painting or Paying for your wheels to be done - advice

  Clio 182
I'm after some advice,

I need two new tyres so I'm feeling the need for a change of wheel colour to anthracite at the same time.

So... Are 182 wheels really that hard to paint? or for the hassle would I be better off paying someone to do it?

The car is a 182 and I wan't anthracite. I'm pretty mechanically minded but I've never painted anything on a car.

And If you could recommend me somewhere to have them painted in the west mids (stafford) it would be appreciated!

Cheers

Try it yourself, I did mine and a lot of people have done there own, Painting isn't hard its just refining the last details i.e. a good lacquer coat, no runs in the paint..

Should be fine, all you have to lose and i mean this seriously not sarcasticly is a few nights sanding and painting and a bit of ££ on paint...

Then again if you want a perfect finish take it to a specialist.

i'll give you my 2 pence

If your wheels are not curbed big time etc, i'd deffo have a crack at it.

I'm currently in the process of doing mine, spent many hours sanding them down, and sorting out the bad curbing. It's a project i personally wish i never started, as it was a big job to make them all 100%. They were in a very bad state, apparently water had got under the lacquer which cause the paint to “peal” away from the alloy.

I paid a 5'er to take the tyres off all the wheels which has made things and will make things a lot easier when it comes to finally spraying them.

TBH mate, what i did to start with, was i went to a scrap yard, bought any old alloy wheel, (£5) i went home and tried to refurbish it in red, just with some cheap spray cans and primer and lacquer. I was so impressed with my work, that’s when i decided I’d do my own. Have a go that way, then you will know if you can do a good job or not ;)

This is the guide I followed:

i think having a go on a scap wheel is a good idea. It is a very heavy task if you want the wheel to be flawless.
If they are standard 182 wheels they are not the most difficult wheels to sand or spray, but at the end of the day it is a wheel and not a nice flat panel. It is involved.
I'm doing a set for a mate at the moment, but I personally wouldn't be bothering if I didnt have spray guns and a compressor.

I've done two sets of wheels, and i've vowed to never spray another set!

It's a good feeling when they are all done though :)

  Low!
A local place does wheel powder coating for £28 Per wheel. I wouldn't bother with the hassle at that price tbh, suppose it depends what the prices are like near you.

Sack that, get them done properly, 90% of rattle can jobs look s**te, and its a ballache imo! Been there done that,

Paying for wheels to be painted is a waste of money. Either spray them yourself, or get it done properly and get them powdercoated.

So wheels painted from the factory aren't done properly?

Powdercoating offers a tougher finish, but paint looks better imo.

I'll re-phrase that, when I say "done properly" I mean for the cash you'll spend on getting them painted you can get them powdercoated which you say yourself will last longer. If both are done by a decent painter/coater then there's only a slight finish difference between paint and powdercoat. My old 172 wheels were powdercoated and the finish was just as good as any I could achieve spraying them at work.

I refurbed mine, filling some big holes in the lips, removing tar etc...it was a 2 days fulltime job but it costed only 10 euros in material (sand paper, sand discs for the drill, filler), then when I was satisfied with the finish I brought them to the local paintshop and have them painted antracite (primer, 2 hands of paint, laquer), 50 euros for the 4 of them. 60 euros in total, not bad I think!

Got my f1's powdercoated.

Cost £60 for 4 wheels, and the finish is really good tbh, not worth messing about yourself at that price :)
