PC / Laptop Geeks Assemble - help for an idiot / me please!

Need some advice please. I need to buy a new laptop to cover the following duties (in priority order)

- ability to game whilst away with work. I have a scuf controller I’ll use, so keyboard / mouse isn’t the approach or something to worry about.

- video and photo editing

- general “family” chuff. Like using word, excel and other mundane activities.

Budget, circa £1500. What would you go for?

For that kind of budget you should be able to find something with a 3070 in it, which will be the most important component if your primary focus is gaming. The processor isn't nearly as important so don't get distracted by those, they'll all be fine for light editing work and the usual web browsing etc. Also try to avoid 4k screens, they're pointless on a laptop because the screen is so small, a high refresh 1080p panel should be attainable at that budget. The most important thing these days is finding something that's in stock though 😂

I'd be tempted by something like this, decent specs and comfortably below budget. You save money by not paying for ROG branding 🤷‍♂️

The GPU is considerably better, but it will be made from less premium feeling materials and probably doesn't have as much RGB 😂
Personally I'm a big fan of the TUF range, they're really good value, but it's all down to personal preference really. I'd spend the money I saved on games and just deal with the disapproving looks from elite gamers 😏

It looks good, and tbh, I’m not that bothered what it looks like, will live most of its life in a laptop bag, or on the kitchen table or on a desk in a hotel bedroom 😂

I was going to post the Asus TUF but I’ve been beaten to it. My last laptop was an Asus and it’s a great design if very old now. Spec is great too. It’s a 1080p display which is all you really need in a laptop, and with a 3070 you’ll have NO problem maxing everything in most games.

Similar cost to that Amazon one that's a bit over budget.


Bigger screen - might be better where you're just relying on the laptop itself without a monitor/tv (probably best for competitive stuff unless the monitor/tv is super fast too)

Will a 500gb drive be half full with Windows and Warzone on it?

Edit: Probably be around 150-200Gb with Windows, Office, Warzone (inc MW) - you know all the "essentials" :ROFLMAO:

That's a good point, although there's enough change from the budget to stick a bigger SSD in it. Not sure if it has a second SATA slot or a 2.5" bay, but even just replacing the boot drive would be fine

If I were you I'd be picking up a second hand Razer Blade 15" and you'll have £500 spare

2 of the lads at work have them and theyre f**king wicked machines. They come with a 2070, 500GB M.2, i7 and 16GB as standard iirc

Desktop is the full card
Max P is the maximum performance laptop version. Bit slower.
Max Q is the efficiency one. Slower again.

Of course it’s not quite as simple as that, for example the mobile 3080 is actually 3070 based.

TBH any 30 series card above a 3060 is going to rip on a 1080p screen.

Can't seem to find any specifically listed as Max P. There's some options on PC Specialist that just state "3070" but guess the question would need to be asked.

I think I've built up near enough the same laptop on PC Specialist as the Scan one - Only it has a faster Samsung 970 Evo Plus SSD, anyone wanna check to see if I've goofed somewhere?! :unsure:

So, a bump on this. It’s nearly decision time. My choices;

- get the new xbox

- get a gaming laptop

- go down the PC build / pre-built route.

I’m leaning more towards the latter two, as I regularly play games with the PC crowd on here, and if a game isn’t cross play I’m suddenly screwed.

In addition, I’ve just bought a new funky monitor so want to exploit it as much as possible. I also have a scuf controller so can just use that on laptop and PC.

So my conundrum; when life returns to normal, I will be travelling one or two nights a week with work. The laptop would let me game in my hotel in the evenings, although the connection and screen may be s**t. I may then also need to replace the laptop periodically as performance in the market place changes.

Or, I can buy a pre-built / build a PC, and swap bits when products change in the market place at a cheaper cost.

I’m seriously considering the static PC route. What do we think? What would you buy (links please) and why.

Static PC route will result in the best performance and if you can go down the pre-built route that should mean you don't get totally raped in price.

Budget still £1500?

Although lets face it in reality here, rather than just swap say a GPU you'll end up with new mother board, cpu and RAM at the same time as well ;)

Definitely PC master race, but the decision between laptop and PC is up to you.

1. as you say, a laptop will not be as nice to game on because touchpad etc, however you could simply buy a keyboard and mouse and have them set up on a USB hub. When you get home, plug the hub and screen in and the laptop essentially becomes no different to a PC useability wise, but unlike a static you can take it with you, and if you are away a few days a week sat bored in a hotel room then you might regret having that fast PC sat at home. Laptops also exist, which is more than can be said for most PC components at the moment.

2. laptops will not perform as well because of the limited cooling and expandability/upgradability is severely limited so once the graphics are outdated, that’s it, nothing you can do. When you do game on it you’ll want to put it on a desk to avoid burning your lap and it’ll make a fair b

£2500 is enough that you could get a pretty kickass laptop with a 3080 in it which would be totally overkill for playing on the move, but when sat at home it’d game well on a bigger display, so theoretically it depends more on the time you’d spend using it away from home, the likelihood of upgrading it and so on.

Speaking as someone who gamed on a laptop for years, has a static PC at home and a gaming laptop for work.
