Penalty for De-Cat

  Suzuki SV1000S

Does anyone know what the penalty is for having a de-cat fitted or is it a 14dat warning to have it put right?

rectification notice, but only if the car fails an emissions test, otherwise they cant tell you to remove it

it must be unroadworthy for the police to issue a rectification notice

de-cats are not illegal

Not having a cat on your car is illegal and if the cops find you havent got one they are entitled to fine you and/or take you to court

It happened to my mate and he got done by one of those roadside emisions tests, unlucky or what

ian

NO, not having a cat is perfectly legal.

What is illegial is failing the emissions test, some cars WILL pass with no cats on, but only a few

  don't

my car will pass with the de-cat

u cant just say de-cats are illegal as some cars were not made with a cat and the chances of the police knowing what cars and what years are very slim tbh

I ask because my Zorst is bloddy loud now with a Cat on! It is a 4" Scorpion System and I get Burbles etc when on deceleration at the mo. Am thinking they may stop me because it will be so f**king loud lol..

right the law states you dont have to have a cat but the car must be road worthy (mot) but all cars post 91 must be made with a cat in the exhaust system

no im saying no car has to have a cat apart from when its made there is no law that states your car always has to have a cat it just has to have one when its sold basically

So basically your saying that on my car it is illegal

no

its only illegal if the emissions dont meet the guidelines, therefore the car becomes unroadworthy

decats are 100% legal to own, fit, and use, so long as the car is still roadworthy

only if you fail the emission test, DE-CATS are NOT illegal, if you can pass the emission test without a cat then your car is legal .

nope, you fit it, then wait til the cops pull you over and give you a rectification notice, then re-fit the cat, take it to a mot station and have the test

with the correct certificate, go to police present documents and then re-fit the de-cat

get it fitted, then just wait till ur MOT to see if its ok. If not take if off

they cant make it illegal to decat just make it law you have to have a cat fitted at all times but i doubt they would do this as most of the cars in the uk remain catted up anyway

The law is an arse when you think about it...

Its possibly illegal for one day a year at the time of the MOT emmissions test.

The rest of the time it appears to be legal providing the vehicle is not sold at first registration without it.

Anyone else baffled (excuse the pun) about the law

Word from me an MOT tester.....

No cat is required legally but your car must meet the emission limits simple as that.

Most cars wont pass the test without a cat anyway unless your really lucky!

And yes I will fit my cat on for when I mot my car, then remove it afterwards.
Thats all it needs to meet the MOT standards, construction and use regulations now thats a different matter!

I hear they will be made illegal in 2005, cant remember where though.
I cant see why though. The business of making de-cats would be rendered absoubtly useless

LOL....ill clear this one up. It is only illegal not to have a cat if your emmisions are above the legally specified limits for idle, and fast idle. It is illegal for your exhaust emissions to pass out of the vehicle if there is no silencer on, or if your exhaust emits the following: smoke or vapour, ashes or cinders, grit , sparks, or oily substances.

1.8.95- passenger car first used on or after must comply to relevant limits, and also between 1.8.92-1.8.95 must comply to relevent limits (emisison limits)

a police officer can issue you with a rectification notice, because more often than not a decat will fail your cars emission test.

LOL.... just to put a spanner in the works i have a question now. after reading the thread.

Ok say you have a decat. You get stopped and caught, rectification notice applies etc... you go thru the usual process of cat back on and re-MOT.

after this is done, you take it off and decat again.

Wot happens if you get caught again....is the "punishment" more severe or do they not have any record of u beign caught for the same offence previously?
