I know im not as good as you lot but this neck of the woods hardly anyone knows of what a porter cable polisher is, need i say more?
Right before i start the 2 pictures below are examples of what i had to deal with today as i didnt take my camera with me.

On one of the forums im on, a lad started pm'ing me with advice on detailing instead of looking it up mainly because i live 10 minutes away from him.
He was just getting in to detailing properly and wanted to know what i use an how i use each product, so i sent him a very lenghty email with web address's that would be able to give him more of an idea of what to do in the process.
His mum and dads merc had just come up to its first year of age, an all he wanted todo is clean it up for them to go out one night next week.
I thourght the best way would be by hand and then i would show him how to use a porter cable polisher or some thing similar at a later date, with this he went out an bourght a whole range of autoglym packs an some other bits to assist him with application and preparation ie clay bars with the lube, 2 mitts, 2 buckets nozzles the lot.
Well this morning i got a call from him asking me to go see his car an how he could fix the bonnet as he said he thinks he stuffed up. Well he did.. The bonnet now needs a re-spray and i had todo the whole of the car myself at his cost.
He basically didnt rinse of to start then used a sponge instead of the mitts an did a lame attempt at washing off.
But he did the bonnet with a proper mop head on his dads angel grinder and because the clay was not cleaned away properly it was like sand paper.
Basically people if you ask anyone on here for advice on cleaning your car, may that be myself, AJ, Alki or any of the others and your unsure of some thing then just ask again to be safe. Dont just jump in thinking you know about some thing that you dont.

really would you go straight onto an expensive car like the bmw??

surely u'd get some scrapper to practice on first, also the bm looks new enough not to even need mopping especially by an amateur. I know how to machine polish yet i still haven't touched my trophy i'll probable do it before selling it but at the moment there's no need as there are next to no imperfections

LOL at a mop head on an angle grinder! Im cracking the PC out on the Lupo for the first time tommorow so im bricking it now.

You will be fine on the PC, just make sure you CLEAN the surface properly before hand, e.g. good wash down and normally a clay, MASK off plastics, and most importantly of all - TAKE YOUR TIME AND DON'T RUSH - check your progress and start in a test panel which will help you determine the best pad/polish combo to use. Also worth prepping the pad before use, normally just a light mist of QD to add extra lubrication early on as the pad wo't be well primed with polish at this point.

The first car I tried my PC on was my Mum's black Golf just on the bonnet and came up great - then went straight onto the 172.

Another tip that I only learny through experience is to
have contact between the pad and surface before starting the PC as otherwise you get polish EVERYWHERE! I normally spread the polish over the panel at speed 1 before going up to about 4-5 usually. You don't need as much polish as you might think, either.

Cheers for the advice, going to print that off! Its going to get a wash and a clay this afternoon then going in the garage.

^ No problemo, most of it is common sense although you will get quicker and produce better results with experience.

You are lucky to have a garage to work in though, I don't and meant to be doing some cars but its too cold out and gets dark too early!

You will be amazed how much improvement you can get from a machine polish, although on my first attempt on my car I aired on the side of caution - so a f ew months later I went back again and improved it further, now just some really minor maring but happy to live with it as I don't want to eat through the clearcoat by polishing too often.

I have to say thanks to Rich and others on here who owned a PC before me though as I never thought I needed one until they convinced me otherwise!

Meh, 6 for the win my friend. Breaks the polish down quicker and better ;)

If I can get the same resultswithout vibrating my arm off I will take that route I think!

I do use 6 when needed but definitely prefer 5, makes a big difference, but I have been told some machines either are faster than others (e.g. the gearing is slightly different) or something...but anyway yes I am a pussy...;)

I know what you mean. I like the idea of PC'ing untill i do it. Very tiresome etc, much prefer finishing by hand (so to speak  ) but as we both know impossible to get good results on black :(

Mine feels like its about to tale off at 6 and the amount of vibrations it causes can't work at that speed comfortably.

Are you trying to kill me people?!?! ;)
