petrol light query

Car  Nissan 350z + 206 Dturbo
hia ive just had the petrol light come on when ive got quater of a tank left in my car !!!

ive just put some more petrol in and its gone off but know ive got half a tank

can anyone tell me what the problem is please and how to fix it ?

cheers gav

I had this with my old 1.6, what I did to sort it was pulled up the rear bench and took the fuel pump/sender cover off removed the connector and cleaned it up as it had a load of shite all over it.

And that took the light off, still can't work out why it does it though seeing as surely the fuel gauge and the trip comp get a reading from the same sender???

lol thanks for the reply but that may aswell been in french lol im crap wiv cars  so how do i get the sensor out is it easy or ? ? ?

Make sure the car is parked on level ground. Turn the ignation off, hold the fuel computer button in (the right wiper stalk) turn the engine on. let it run the lamp test for a minute or so with the engine running then press the milage reset button. That usually works for me....;)

Lift the rear bench up and you'll see a black circle with some wires going through it, pull this up and you'll see the top of the fuel tank with the pump/sender sitting there. Theres a connector on the top of the sender which on of the wires that goes through the black plastic circle connects to. Take this off and clean up and crap in it and then reconnect it and see if that does the trick.

That just clears the stored fault and when it happened to me the dash never registered a fuel gauge fault.

Dial diagnostic mode, not a lot really. Lets you check all the segments of the LCD are functioning along with all the other lights and gauges. Also shows you any faults stored and lets you see the fuel in the tank in litres and also shows fuel flow rate in l/hour.

So not that much useful tbh.
