ph1 not starting first time

  172 cup
hi there searched through years of threads trying to figure out why it wont start first time so starting my own thread.

sometimes it can take ten times + for it to fire up, its turning over just not starting and its embarassing when filling up etc.. but yesterday it would not fire up at all so left it at my dads till i could have a look today.
the previous owner changed the tdc sensor himself so this was my first suspect, checked today and it has the new blue one and blue loom so that put a spanner in the works as this is the updated one, cud he of messed this up??

checked the relays in the engine bay they looked ok to me, can hear the fuel pump prime also like a whirring noise when turn ignition on and the red immobiliser light goes out too.
so im a bit miffed what it could be. anyone have any ideas?? should i change the relays for new ones as when i did fiddle about with the relays it started first time then later on tonight took three times before it fired into life. reallly annoying and want to get it sorted

thanks in advance

How are the connections that the previous owner made to fit the new spec CPS as this can cause issues. Without diagnostics i'm afraid you're gonna be stuck as it could be a simple case of the ECM isn't 'seeing' rotation due to a faulty CPS signal. It could also be the main control relay not giving power... what i'm getting at is there's a fair few things that need checking out with a multi-meter and scope which are quickly checked with a decent bit of diagnostics kit.

hi mick thanks for reply
i had a look at the connection but it was wrapped in elecy tape i could feel the heat shrink cases underneath so assumed it was wired correctly. going to replace the easy stuff like the fuses and relays in the engine bay fuse box to rule them out, if still doing will get it hooked up to diag to see what is causing the problem.
noticed that when i finally do get it to start and switch off and try starting again it will fire first time, so its just the intial start up most the time im having problem with.
