Sorry for digging up a fifteen-year-old thread, but nobody ever came back with hard numbers and I happen to have some.
I'm in the Netherlands with a March 2001 Sunflower Ph1. Out of curiosity I pulled the Dutch national register (RDW) in July. For yellow Phase 1 cars on Dutch plates: 9 still registered, and only 2 of those with both a valid MOT and active insurance. The rest are off the road, with MOTs lapsed anywhere between 2009 and this year, or exported.
So two on Dutch roads. Mine is one, and the other is a car I know of — it's looked after by the same specialist as mine, which tells you something about how small this gets.
Against the UK count in here — 31 or 32 imported, around 20 still going in 2010 — I'd be curious whether anyone has a more recent figure. Fifteen years is a long time in the life of a cheap hot hatch.
Tunst was right in post #2 that there's no register for these, only for the Trophy. Still isn't, as far as I can tell.
And Jimbo-Clio's line in #9 about there being very few standard mint examples has aged well. Mine is completely standard, original OZ F1s and gear knob, nothing done to the engine, 159,000 km. It's in with a Renault Sport specialist right now for a cam belt, water pump, dephaser and a general recommission after sitting more than it should have.
One thing worth flagging for anyone searching: Jaune Tournesol (paint code 377) is not Jaune Sirius / Liquid Yellow (J37). Sirius is the later metallic on the Clio III, V6 and Megane II. Search the wrong one and you'll find the wrong cars.
