Police decibel measuring device.

Hi all,

Just to continue this discussion, I remember someone mentioning getting fined because their aftermarket zorst was too loud (I think it was megzy but don't quote me!)

Couldn't find the thread but I think it was something along the lines of the loudest it can be is 80db? Again don't quote me!

Anyway it resulted in a fine as the fb measurement was over 80db. So I was watching top gear the night before last and they took out an Aston Martin, a Ferrari and a Lamborghini. They went somewhere in the EU to a massive embassy building (maybe?) which had underground tunnels they could drive in.

So they measured the db value of the Ferrari and it hit a mid range of 86-89 db?!?!

So how can they justify that standard levels are 80db when a factory super car is hitting 86-89db not even at its peak?!

From what I understand they have to use a Exetech (or equivalent) db meter.

Ofcourse an app wouldn't stand in court haha :)

Just been doing a bit of research around the subject as it seems to be a bit more frequent db fining now

Did you read the series of VOSA emails in the pistonheads thread that was linked to?

Basically the answer was extremely confusing. Every single car has a different road legal noise limit because there's no one body that decides the noise limit: it's partly the manufacturer, EU regs & IIRC also VOSA. This is why supercars can legitimately be louder than a Renault Clio.

The above is all to do with being "road legal" according to a VOSA/MOT test station. All the people in the Pistonheads/CS.net thread were being told to change their exhausts under a completely different piece of legislation - can't remember the name but it was something not neccessarily vehicle related like "disturbing the peace" which turned out to be subjective rather than a specific noise level. This seemed to explain why (it was claimed by all the people who had been fined) that when asked the police couldn't actually give a specific safe limit (e.g. XX dB @ 50% RPM)

*of course none of this is according to me, it's a summary of what others on CS/PH said in the thread that the OP is reffering to. It would be great to hear from someone who is in the police force*

back the point..my old R32 GTR had HKS/janspeed botch 4" straight through with one small box and that was loud on tick over and I never got greif for it being loud...I got bother for it liking going sideways in the wet and for going "too slow" on the motorway at 2am but not for the Noisy ass exhaust

It seems to be all very subjective.. depending who who get.. all P.C.'s vet you with an "attitude test" at first contact anyhow so its your choice how it turns out ...to some degree! ;)

you can have a aftermarket exhaust but it can be no louder than when the car came out the factory.

sports cars and super cars are loud from standard so thats why they dont get hassled.

police no longer use decibel readers on cars but they do on bikes.

a friend told me this information through his family member traffic officer as my mate had been given a producer for his loud aftermarket exhaust on his focus, because it was louder than factory volume not because it was aftermarket.

Whats the best method for testing your exhaust whether its suitable for track? Dont really fancy taking the chance with an iphone app lol

Well every 10db (approx.) means twice the volume, so if the "standard" is 80db, and the ferrari's etc were hitting 89db, thats means it's nearly twice as loud as the "standard" in the real world... How can they say this? stupid tbh.

Every 3dB is twice as loud.

nope

Ratio doubling:
A sound pressure level +6 dB SPL,
a power level of +3 dB,
an electric voltage level of +6 dB,
a loudness level +10 dB

+3 dB = twice the power (Power respectively intensity − mostly calculated)
+6 dB = twice the amplitude (Voltage respectively sound pressure − mostly measured)
10 dB = twice the perceived volume or twice as loud (Loudness nearly sensed − psychoacoustics)
