My m8 is getting mass popups when she is surffing the internet, and i said to backdate her pc, do you think this will work? and whould she lose photos, songs ect on the laptop?

Google toolbar has a good popup blocker, I just use that to stop them coming up, would say it stops about 95% of them.

If she's getting loads she needs to be running a spyware/malware scan. Might also be worth running HiJackThis ( http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php ) and posting on http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ with the log that it generates.

If there isn't a problem then firefox coupled with Adblock Plus will stop all the popups.

Tell her to do the following:

Download, install and run a full scan with this http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Download and install this, update it then enable all protection http://www.download.com/SpywareBlas...-SpywareBl&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlpid=10196637

Then install Google toolbar and make sure she has a good Anti-virus program like Avast! http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Get rid of all virus's and spyware then use a decent AV solution (AVG free is good) and install firefox + adblock plus.

Avast! has a better detection engine and better cleaning... AVG missed a crapload.

I always get users comming in asking for their home systems and have been recomending AVG. I will have to have a look into avast if its better.

The very best free software is Avira... but it can be less user friendly.
