Port forwarding utorrent+netgear

Im trying to setup port forwarding within utorrent.

Ive created a service within the routers(NETGEAR) config with a port number for utorrent.

then ive created a firewall rule to always alllow this inbound and outbound...and then it asks for 'send to lan' and then a port number.

Ive gone into network connections found my connection and found its connected to 192.168.0.7.....Is this the ip i put in the send to lan box?


Ive done this already and utorrents allowing connections....Im unsUre though on what ive done is correct or could be a security risk.

seems right to me, just choose a random port not the default one.

if u are running utorrent or dealing in torrents fullstop, you should really install peerguardian and have that running when the PC starts up.

the whole idea of blocking ports is to control the flow of data coming in and out. Ports that will be open are 80 or 8080 by default as these are ports for the internet.

21 is a FTP server and should be blocked, if u want to run an ftp server then have a random port and ensure its forwarded properly.

You can also now remove any software firewall you have installed on your machine, the router is doing all the work now! so that will free up some resources. Becareful what port u put utorrent on as some (most) IPs throttle the bandwidth of known default torrent ports.

and reading ur IP question, i would go into network connections and set the IP for the network card to static. As in you set the ip of 192.168.0.7. It sounds to me that at the moment your router is assigning IPs.
Once set then yes the send to lan is the LAN IP of the computer you want the torrent data to go to

Ive set a random port within utorrent itselft that ok.

Its just the netgears firewall rule.

when i go and setup a rule .etc,theres an option thats says 'SEND TO LAN SERVER' and then asks for an ip....I just wasnt too sure which ip i should be putting in the box?

i went into my network connections and then double clicked the network connection im connected to (MARVEL)....which tells me the duration of the connection .etc ...then on the second tab it tells me the Ip/Sub net mask .etc .etc.

The IP address its on says 192.168.0.6....now is this the IP i should be putting in the routers config under 'SEND TO LAN SERVER' to allow connections incoming and outgoing.

Sorry i know its a little confusing (for me anyway)

All this port fowarding shins the f*ck out of me. I havent a clue whats going on.

Send to LAN server is asking for your local IP.

So the chances are yes thats yours. But assign it as static as said before as when the DHCP lease runs out you will be assigned a new IP.

To find out your IP.

Start, then Run. type cmd then press enter

type ipconfig and press enter

Will give you your local IP, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway, when assigning the Static IP you will need all of these. The Default gateway will be your DNS server as well

Ive just gone into ipconfig and its showing

ip:192.168.0.6
Subnet:255.255.255.0
default gateway:192.168.0.1

So in the lan to server box i put 192.168.0.6?

Put a tick in manually enter ip or something along those lines. The enter the details you have above. Using the Gateway as DNS setting as well

Port forwarding: Imgaine this. You have to walk thru a specific door to get to a specific area of a room.

That door is locked but you have a key! Now think about it from a data point of view.

there are loads of ports and when port forwarded you have the key. So if you port forwarded port 248 for utorrent to ip 192.168.0.3. Any data that needs to get to 192.168.0.3 via port 248 will have the "key" to do so.

Yes mate thats right. If thats the gateway address that will handle your DNS for you. Only need it in once
