Pre-outs?

I know next to nothing about car audio, if a headunit says 4x50w on the front, does that mean 4 pre-outs?

My mate has a sony headunit, and it says 4x50w on the front but there are no pre-outs on the back? theres writing on the back saying where they should be but nothing there?

4x50w means it has a 4 channel amp built in. that kicks 50w per channel,
not sure if thats max or rms,

basically it refers to the speaker wires coming out the back,

rear left, rear right, front left, front right

Yeahh but theres nothing on the back? Should it have? It has writing engraved on it saying left, right, sub, or something like that, but theres no wires or anything, not even got a hole drilled out if the back..

if youir head unit has pre out there will be sockets (look similar to the sockets on the front of a tv that you can put av wire into) in pairs.

Yeah thats what I thought, but theres nothing, I told him to take it back because hes got the reciept, but I wanted to check that 4x50w meant 4 preouts?

i'm pretty sure that it will have at least 1 pre-out

they will be sockets like said above.

have you got the model no. so someone can check for you online?

nope 4x50w means it has 4 speaker connections (this is in the iso-loom that plugs straight into the back of the headunit and goes straight into the speakers in your car). pre outs are used for amps. should say on the box how many pre-outs it has

iirc i had to buy an adapter for my blaupunkt HU so i could get the pre out sockets.

Whats the make/model etc?

Ahh right well like I said I'm clueless with electricals, I'll ask him for the part number, I told him to take it back anyway because its a pretty terrible headunit if you can't use a sub with it!

4X50watts refers to the head units internal amplifier....

4 = 4 channels Front left & right Rear left & right
50watts = Max output per channel

The above will be fed via the ISO speaker block, (plugs in near the head units on board fuse location)...

The engraving your referring to Sub, Front, Rear, etc etc would usually be found near red & white output jacks, if there are none present, then it obviously has none....

For an idea what it would look like google it....
