prepping carbon fibre

my carbon fibre bonnet is in crap condition, so i'm planning on spraying it and leaving the bulge carbon, is there a special way to prep carbon?

if it is laquerd over then just use a very fine grade paper like 1200 to 2000. anything more corser and the laquer will show the scratches but anything finer and the laquer may flake off once dry.
oh and try not to break through either.
