Problem Diagnosed at Last!

  Breaking A 172 Replica
Cheers for those that helped. I have now found the source of the weird noises.

It is the exhaust between the engine and the cat. I drove to Bedford today (150 mile round trip) and when I got home it had got so bad I was feeling light headed due to the fumes!

Basically what is the part called?

And when one places their exhaust system (inc Cat) is this part replaced?

Thanks

Sam

sounds like the manifold to me?
It goes, engine, manifold, car, centre section, back box.

One of the welds of my manifold on the engine-side came loose. Did not smell any fumes inside the car.

Started with my engine idleling / idling badly, and a raspy sound, at that point there was a little crack in the weld of the manifold. Kept on driving till one of the pipes came loose. (as I haven't found a guy who I trusted to fix it).

I sorted it with a garage specialisted in renault (valvers and RS's)

BTW. Your exhaust could also leak between the manifold and the cat. (gasket?)

I think it could be between the manifold and the cat it is leaking.

I will get it into an exhaust place for them to check it out.

Is it possible just to buy the gasket on its own?

What does the gasket look like? Is it like the flexi join bit?

Thanks

depends what engine youve got in yours. i can tell you that the 1.6 has a cat built into the downpipe, with a braided flexi portion at the top (manifold) end, which can blow. if youre exhaust or engine mounts are shagged though, its more likely to be a crack in the manifold caused by the excessive movement of a poorly supported exhaust stressing the manifold. i found out the hard way!!!!

could be the plum joint about £18 if it rattles underneath ur seat when u accelerate in 5th gear at low speeds, maybe it, that was my problem and it was mega boomy

It is just a 1.2 engine with standard exhaust.

It did sound similar to what you have described RIZ but it has now sounds like there is no exhaust at all!

The steering column rubber (the bit that is supposed to stop your feet getting wet) doesn't sit flush to the floor (not sure why) and because of this I can feel/smell the heat and fumes coming through the gap. This makes me positive it is something before the cat.

What's this plum joint? My car is getting boomy, but the exhaust doesn't seem to be blowing, could it be this? Where do I get it from and what is it?
