problems downloading and installing...please help!

hi i got a lap top for christmas and ever since i got it i have had great difficulty in downloading or installing anything. the little bar that goes up as something installs or is being downloaded will get so far and then just stop. no error message comes up. i have tied just leaving it but nothing happens. also when i talk on msn my conversations very rarely send (although sometimes they do). i have messed about with all the settings, turned off the firewall etc and i just can't work out what is wrong with it, it is really annoying.

also, apart from this the lap top seems to work fine. if anyone has any ideas i would be pleased to hear them.

What anti-virus are you using?

norton was on when i got it. my mate tried to take it off but not sure if he completely removed it.

any ideas?

How are u connecting to the internet? If its a router might have a firewall or somethin in thats blocking things.

hi yes i use a wireless router. how do i take the firewall off this?

Do you not have any documentation with it that explains how? Its usually acessible via a web browser with an ip like http://192.168.0.1

i will have to have a look and see. thanks for the help. hope i can get it sorted. i am sure i had turned the firewall off to be honest!
