ProENGINEER anyone?

Anyone use it? Know it well?

I know ProD and Solidworks like the back of my hand, but I'm teaching myself ProE and it does seems such a much simpler beast....yet I'm cack at the assemblies atm :(

I just can't get things to "mate", keeping getting "Invalid Contraints".

Any help would be much appreciated....

That won't have made sense to many at a guess....

To most I will have just sounded like a G33K.....

(P.S I would put it in Technology Chat, but I felt GC would have more coverage. Mod's feel free to move it if you want.)

What are you trying to mate to what? and what are trying to achive? any movement?

Also which version are you using?

Pro/E Schools Edition (due to my job...lol)

Stupidly simple assembly ATM. Just as a play about....want to insert this screen:

Into this lid:

No movement.

It's going to be something simple I know it....just me being a fool.

Didn't know there was a Schools Edition!

I'll have to double check im right, havent used proe for a while.

you should be able to mate one surface to the other, then align the datum planes, possibly one with an offset for placement.

different software i know but i used autocad mechanical desktop in college and i werent able to do this. i think i did get around it by making the "screen" smaller that the hole in the lid like just a mm smaller

From what I hear, ProE is quite fussy when it comes to assemblies and constraints in general, takes a bit of getting used to but when you get the hang of it it's better than a lot of other packages in that you MUST constrain the parts properly.

I used Autodesk Inventor in my last job and although easy to use and navigate you could just as easily screw a model up by under constraining a sketch, I guess this is probably possible in any CAD system though.

I use Unigraphics Solid Edge now and it's pretty good!

SolidWorks is by far the best you know ;) Are you only using the SE ProE becasue its for company use? I've got some SW 2006 CD's if you want a copy... Not too sure whats going on with the mating tbh. Are you having a problem with importing the parts, mating the radius, or mating in general?

I agree with the above comment, some packages will show an error if you mate two surfaces that are conflicting in size. This however is silly as most components are interference fit. Take a video clip of what your trying to do? Have you tried the Help option?

Thanks for all the suggestions, it's still being a b**ch. But I've found that mating the surfaces, then aligning is working ok atm. It's purely for practice really.

And we use ProE....or are going to use ProE becuase its free from schools if you do the initial license training. Which is what I'm in the middle of now. There's a huge amount you can't do on the Education version though :(

If I worked in a company and we could afford the full license for the industrial version....I'd bite their hand off lol ;)

Meek, thanks muchly for the offer. I might ask you to post one or two actually, if that would be ok? We could always put SW onto a few computers independantly.....:)

just select the bottom of the lid and the base of the lid recess, then select one of the round edges of the lid and select the corresponding edge of the recess. you should only need two constraints for that model. select 'allow assumptions' for this.

that might not be very clear, but without actuall being there, i find it hard to describe.

Solidworks do a student package Gem.. I get a free copy every year, but I don't know how much it costs the uni. Suppose that's where the cost is. Sounds like Meek is one step ahead though lol.

In most CAD packages its not the latest version that drives down the price of old ones... In most cases they become obsolete, if you were able to get your hands on an old copy then they would charge you more or less full whack! Only CAD resellers are meant to sell on new packages with a Dongle or Serial number. It sounds silly but once you buy the licence it is yours and cannot be privately sold elsewhere! Hence why you don't see them on ebay... It's infact illegal :(

I've got genuine SW2006 CD's if you want to *cough* use them? Got some special numbers to make them work too ;)

Realise i'm digging up an old thread here,

Anybody have any advice for using PRO/E for building layouts?
