psp umd movies a flop just like blu ray

A high-ranking Universal Studios executive told Reuters that the company has stopped making UMD movies and added, "It's awful. Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb - like Blu-ray."

lol well yet another sony product thats failing

"Several movie studios have reduced their UMD offerings lately. Just last month, the home entertainment divisions of Paramount, Warner and Sony started limiting their movie titles. Universal Studios and Image Entertainment joined that list in March."

even sony them selfs arnt supporting it ah well

Except mini-disc did actually take off and is alive and well.. but maybe not so much for home use.

UMD was a stupid idea... hence it failed.

Not forgetting that huge sony flop, the cd.

Whoops.

Betamax - Superior to VHS but jvc's system was cheaper.
Atrac - Better compression than mp3

Umd's and mini discs seem to be very similar in make up, what needs to happen is a umd data drive to be launched for pc's

tom im not saying their tech isnt good im just saying it flopped the reason the cd didnt fail was because it wasnt just sony behind it so they couldnt just keep it to them selfs

atrac and umd's and such like fail because only sony use them and they wont license them to anyone else they have done it with other things too

I said as soon as UMDs were announced that it was a ghey idea. Add piracy to this and u've got another failed Sony invention. Retards

They shot themselves in the foot - why buy a UMD movie where you can only play it back on your PSP when you can buy the DVD and rip it to your PSP's memory card & watch the DVD on a standalone?
UMD games - obviously yes, but UMD movies - nope.

Wrong, it was a joint venture between phillips and sony - In 1979 Philips and Sony decided to join forces, setting up a joint task force of engineers whose mission was to design the new digital audio disc

Wrong again - the reason betamax failed is because JVC let anybody make tapes, where sony strangled the beta market by limiting who could make tapes for their machine. VHS got hundreds of titles, whereas betamax only had the handful that sony would allow.

And about 6 years too late.

Wouldnt make any difference, who wants a 1.5gig read only drive? We have bigger flash cards.

Blu-ray DVD has not yet been launched as a consumer format in Europe.

Although it will be up against HD-DVD - time will tell. But Blu-ray DVD recorable media does has a larger capacity than HD-DVD.

On the professional side I have been suppling Sony XD-CAM (based on blu-ray tech) for over a year now. Currently I just can not get enough stock to supply!

Agree with most comments on UMD Video.

Pointless comparing Blu-ray to Betamax, Umd's and minidisc - All Sony "inventions"

Blu-ray is backed/supported/developed by Sony, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, JVC, Apple and Hewlett Packard. Also the following companies are using it - Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox, Mgm, Warner Bros, Paramount...

Funny how the Universal (HD-DVD supported) spokesman says it's going to fail. Lots of big, well actually giant, companies putting their money into it. Not quite the same as Betamax now is it.

griff th etrouble with blu ray is it costs alot and they need the ps3 to get the market share as it was supposed to be a cheap way to get it into houses but from what i have been reading the costs are going up and up and it might not be a cheap way to get it into peoples homes any more.

i agree the comment from the bloke was biased but who knows he may be right ;)

Projected pricing from the BDA is -

Movies - £20/£23
Recordable media - 25gb = £10 and 50gb = £25
RW media - £14 and £34 respective
PC Drive - £300

I remember my first CD-rom drive was about £180 and it's like anything with technology prices are always high in the beginning.

We'll probably find that both formats suceed and both do well. HP are already making dual players and it wouldn't suprise me if more companies follow suit.

Either way time will tell and you/Universal chap may be right.

PS - Watched Star Wars 2:Attack of the clones in 1080* HD last night (all 16gb of it, no extras just the movie) Amazing!!

* - downscaled to 720p

The idea of paying over the odds for a movie that you can only watch on a small screen is s**t. Its a games console, that's what it is good at. I can't imagine anyone ever buying a film on UMD tbh.
