putting 2003 rear lights on a 1998 model ???

hi guys
i recently bought a 1998 clio and want to fit the later style rear lights from a 2003 model, i tried doing this and things went kind of crazy, from what i gather the wiring needs doctoring in some way !!!! bearing in mind im no mechanic whats involved in this?? is it straight forward to do, any advice would be greatly appreciated
