putting the car to sleep......the cost????

I am thinking about putting the 172 in a garage and just storing it for a while as i am doing a fair bit of milage to work and most is in traffic its not getting driven as it should, i would sell it but the ass has fallen out of the market at the moment so that doesn't make sense either.

my idea is, to get a run around, i know of an ok one and use this for my drive, put the clio away for a little while and get it back out in a few months to either sell or by that time i may have moved and only need it for weekends.

so what i want to know is........

can i claim tax back on it?

i am pretty sure i can claim insurance back on it..

any other ideas?

Go onto the dvla website where you can download/ print a tax refund form.
You can claim the tax back for each full month still left to run on the disc but you'll also need to declare the car SORN.
You can cancel the insurance but if anything happens to the car in storage you wont be covered, ask your ins company about storage insurance or ask them to put it on hold so you can save it until you drive the car again.

You'll get tax back but only whole months, so if you tax ends in March you would only get Feb back IF you of course declared it SORN before the end of Jan. But then the money from that would go towards the tax of your new car I guess.

Insurance again you'd be using that on your new car surely? Otherwise if you settle up your insurance with the 172 and start afresh on the new motor you would lose a years potential no claims. Unless you've only very very recently entered a new year of insurance.

If you do store it, and then sell it, it's only gonna be worth less than it is now I'd have thought...

^^^^^^I doubt it, tidy williams are fetching the same as mk1 172's atm.

But that just shows how little Ph1s are worth now :( I don't think they'll ever climb in value, till we're sorta 20 years down the line, and even then only crazy mint, original low milers will be worth anything as so many were made and sold. Williams were limited so it's a bit different.

neil and xcore, i am not bothered about it getting nicked or deteriorating, just don't want to loose money on tax and insurance whilst not using it

So just drive the bloody thing. If it was worth big money then fair enough store it but its not

I only use mine on weekends, usually get a lift into work. Just make sure you use it well at the weekends.

If you don't want to use it, sell it and put the money in a high interest account until you want another.

thats been my other thought mate, think its too much money to have tied up in a car tbh, would consider going back to a mark 1 maybe. (more fun anyways)

think its something i am going to have to look at once i move house, once i can walk to work i may be able to have something silly for weekends

You could sell up as edde says, its only going to loose money sat there and not being driven.

You could bank the money and save a bit,buy a shed and when your in a better position buy something really nice
