How does HD and macs work? i mean our screens arent HD ready are they? or are they?

i ask simply because ive been watching HD trailers since Tiger came out, and its fantastic, the Quality is draw droppinly good, but diodnt think..."hold on.... these are HD trailers, how the fook am i watching them?" and yes its a ridiculously big amount of difference.....
