Question for photoshoppers

If i've got a picture that i want to insert (im making a wallpaper for my missus lol), how do i get rid of the white background but keep the actual picture, is the only way to do it using the cut tool to cut round it? I tried putting it into paint and using the remove white option for copy/pasting but that didn't work. :dapprove:

Best way would be pen tool for a path the turn it into a selection.

I'd rather do it myself to be honest mate, only way i'm gonna learn as i'm trying to teach myself photoshop using tutorials and forums but wasn't really sure what to search to find the answer to this question so thought i'd ask here
